Question of the Day: How often do you stock up?

Stock up on groceries that is. Do you to the market once a day, once a week, or once a month?

29 Comments:

i'll stop by the store every day or two. i have the luxury of doing that, seeing as i'm within walking distance of three grocery stores, and i also have the luxury of time. years ago, we would do a once-a-week overhaul, and i always hated it. but it's understandable if people only have the time to run to the store once a week on a saturday morning.

Since I spend my weekdays living in Manhattan, it is convenient for me to go to the market every day for food products. When I go to my weekend place, I pick up paper goods, soaps and other nonperishibles. This works out well because it is definitely cheaper to buy the nonfood items in NJ.

We tend to go to the grocery for staples once a week, usually at the weekend, as we live in a neighbourhood without a proper grocery store. Then we shop for produce and things like yogurt every day at our local Bengali shops, of which we have many. On top of that, I probably go to our health food store twice a week for tofu, quinoa, etc. Then I receive an organic box delivery every few weeks, and I will sometimes have health food staples delivered as well. Actually, now that I'm writing this down I am realising what a drag it all is.

Daily--and sometimes more than daily.
The only days skipped are when we realize that we can't pack anything else into the fridge and should perhaps live on leftovers for a day or two. I'm lucky to have farmer's markets, a great butcher, and many other options within walking distance.

My life is so hectic, my boyfriend and I were so excited last week to go grocery shopping, it had been literally a month and a half since we were able to find the time to go! I love going to, so I was missing it! This weekend I am free as a bird, so I have every intention of hitting up my local A & P, then heading to the farmers market.

I buy groceries once a week, on the weekends primarily.

We end up shopping somewhere 2 - 3 times each week. With six kids between us, and neighborhood kids who spend hours each day at our house, we're a catering service without actually being one.

almost every day, usually in the middle of the night! i have trouble sleeping, so i wander the aisles for fun :-)

Friday afternoons I have a standing date with a friend for grocery shopping.

That said, I typically manage at least one more trip during the week. If I see a good recipe or think of something I've not had in a while I'll go pick up what I need to make it.

In addition to how often per week, I wonder how many people make lists for grocery shopping or, like me. just walk in and put whatever you find that you like in the cart!

I always shop for staples on Friday nights or Saturday mornings, depending on whether I'm planning my weekly shopping at Wegmans or Martins. I also stop during the week if I decide I want a particular item mid-week. I do have a CSA pick up on Thursday afternoons for my veggies, which I supplement with a trip to the Farmer's market on Saturday mornings. I love to grocery shop, so it's never a chore.
I do make a list when I go my weekly staple shopping....otherwise I'd probably forget something important...like toilet paper! lol

I normally do our shopping on the weekend. A trip to the grocery store, another to meat market and this time of year a spin out to the fresh produce stands in Brighton Colorado. Last weekend I found locally grown sweet peas ( did'nt even make it to the stove, ate them as we shuck'em ) and asparagus. Yes, rbryants we have a magnetized shopping pad on the fridge door and wife and son can add items through the week. I think it cuts down on the number of trips for forgotten items.

I get a farm share of vegetables every week during the summer and stop at the market a couple times during the week for fruits, along with the occasional dairy and bread items.

i like to go about three times a week. once for the staples (milk, bread) at the local commercial grocery store, once for the fresh veggies at the indian farmers market and finally at the trader joes for the yummy snacks and tidbits.

Since I live in Brooklyn and don't have a car or a granny cart and can only carry a few bags at a time, I usually end up stopping at the grocery store every two or three days. But maybe that has more to do with the fact that most of the stuff I buy is perishables. I really miss being able to drive a car to the grocery store and just load up!

rbryants, i use lists. if i dont use a list i forget what i went to the store for .

but my husband (the one person in the relationship with an actual restaurant job) loves to just go and see what's available and get inspired by what he sees. i do that a little bit, but mostly stick with my lists.

I do a decent sized shop at least once a week. However, we always end up going to the corner shop what seems like every day!

staples once a month.
Otherwise everything else on an as needed basis. The advantage from living blocks away from a corner grocery store, two major grocery stores, and a variety of specialty shops (booze, bread, etc).

Once a week for most things and the items on sale we'll need in the coming month. However, we usually end up finishing some staple like milk or John's lunch meat on an odd day, so back to the store I go. Luckily, there's a grocery store down the block and several health food stores within five miles (one within walking distance).

Shopping for me is part of exercising - I walk to this or that store several times a week (fortunate to be able to do so), and forgetting something is no big deal. I have different items I tend to buy at different places. I will, though, get in the car to go to Trader Joe's or to outlying ethnic markets. (Immigrants in the DC area by and large live in the 'burbs.)

I've also started carrying a nylon stuff-sack in my purse so that I can avoid all those cursed plastic bags, and the nylon bag is easier to carry.

I like this question! Everyone has such different answers. I live in Brooklyn, so I take the train to Trader Joe's once a week for things like tortillas, cheese, pasta, coffee, etc. - only two bags, enough to carry home. Everything else I buy at our greenmarket in Union Square on Saturday mornings. Luckily the greenmarket is four days a week, so I can stop by on my way to work to pick up more fruits and veggies as needed.

I do one big grocery run every Sunday. I bring a list, but it's usually just for the necessities - toilet paper, etc. Everything else is purchased on a whim!

Slightly related, but interesting : 1938 prices, A&P, Somerset, Ohio.

I try to stop at Fairway, Trader Joe, Wholefoods, Eli's, the Union Square Greenmarket, The Grand Central Market, Dean & DeLuca each once per week. If I'm intelligent I can break this down so that most of the food is bought from Fairway, with small "extras" (a quarter pound of cheese, a salmon steak) at the other places. At my home in the Hudson Valley I rely upon Stop & Shop, Adam's Fairacre Market, and the Rhinebeck Farmers' Market.

Good times. Good times.

Even though we now live within 3 miles of 5 different grocery stores, we only go once a week. I guess that habit dates from when lived in the country and the nearest grocery was 25 miles away.
Hub and I called Friday night our "date night" - that is, our date to go to Publix, Whole Foods and a pharmacy or big box store that shall remain nameless. I keep a running list throughout the week of staples that are running low, plan menus on Friday afternoon and add any needed food items to the list at that point. We then grab our cloth bags and venture out.

Every Tuesday you will find me at a nearby grocery because it is "Senior Day" & I get a 6% discount--that's when I buy personal items or paper goods. All other days, I shop at Fresh Market. Rarely is there a farmer's market close by. I really enjoy food shopping!

I shop 3-4 times a week, depending on what is on the menu. Lots of fresh produce and seafood and meat. Staples I stock up on when they are on sale. If I don't make a list I wander around like a moron . . . !

Last time I went grocery shopping with someone he made fun of me endlessly for having a list. But I'm way too impulsive without one, and I forget half of what I wanted to get.

I try to make one big-ish trip per week (I alternate between Trader Joes or Whole Foods, depending on what Im running out of...). Although by a "big trip" I usually spend $30 tops- still have to get it home on the L train somehow! Then I'll go periodically shopping to the smaller stores in Brooklyn for fresh foods 2 or 3 more timesthroughout the week.

Union Square farmer's market for herbs, vegetables and fruits.
Garden of Eden on a daily basis to decide what to make for dinner -mussels, chicken, a piece of fish.
Emi yogurts at Walgreen which has the best price so far.
Rice, lentils and Indian groceries from Kalustiyan.
Ice cream from Il Lab in the LES.

anywhere from two to four times a week..sometimes at a major grocery store or a neighborhood grocer or trader joes. some stores have items that some others don't have...i've been known to go to three different grocery stores in one day to look for some ingredients such as lamb neck bones...
