Fill in the blank.

wax fruit

well, someone had to say it ... ;-)

Looks better than it tastes: Lobster-stuffed salmon, with lots of sage in the stuffing. Too many strong flavors fighting a major war.

Tastes better than it looks: Steak tartare

caviar.

tastes better than it looks: haggis and lutefisk.

Those beautiful but totally tasteless "tomatoes-on-the-vine" sold at supermarkets

Meringue cookies, the real hard ones. What's with them? Save the calories, no matter how few! (I'll take Caley's word on haggis and lutefisk...)

The pies in the little twirling refrigerator case down at the diner always look better than they taste.

Split pea soup

I'll second the pies in the bakery case....they always taste like refridgerator!

Brussels Srouts-start off good but by the 3rd bite or so I am finished.

pies and cakes in diners, cinnamon buns.

Vodka Martini, shaken, not stirred.

Cupcakes at groceries.

Tomatoes look better then they taste (sorry, just don't like em)

on the other side of things...

Tuna caserole tastes better then it looks

"Chinese" food . . .

All the baked goods in grocery stores or food markets----cookies, brownies, pies, cakes, cinnamon rolls, etc.

I agree with JEP all sweet items from grocery stores food markets and diners all empty calories and not flavor. I found one exception ....the muffins at the local Co-op Market, nice and moist and lots of flavor, especially the cranberry/nut, the date and the peach...great! But stay away from those grocery store and diner sweets!

That rainbow cake that is sold by the slice at Canter's. It's inedible!

andouillette

Most croissants. Oily, heavy, ick.

Thanks for adding sushi to the list! That's the other thing I was thinking of.

Those giant cookie cakes you get at the mall. Hard cookie + artifical frosting = gross. But they are fun to look at.

Uni tastes so much better than it looks.

Marzipan anything.

Croissants and cinnamon rolls. Never met I liked-- somehow nigglingly unsatisfying. : x

Cakes with rolled fondant icing. It's June, high season for gorgeous looking yet icky tasting rolled fondant cakes.

looks better: salad
tastes better: chopped liver

Beets: lovely color, taste like dirt. (Except, oddly, at a Swedish restaurant near me. I have no clue was to how they dedirtify them.)

Black-and-white cookies

maasikas - I agree on the black and white cookies, but every once in a great while I hit a good one...forcing me to keep trying.

The birds near my home have eaten a lot of bad black and white cookies missing just one bite!

ANYTHING with cilantro. Honestly, I don't know how people eat the stuff.

Canned nacho cheese. On the tastes-better-than-it-looks: liver and onions.

Err.. cupcakes. I'm guilty of baking lots and lots of them, and even though they tasted good, the main reason people love them is their appearance. I'd say 99% commerial cakes look better than they taste. Seriously, opera cake, sacher torte.. *yawn*
