Ice cream sandwich bars - which are the best?
A colleague recently gave me a Dolly Madison ice cream sandwich and boy was it yummy. We both liked the biscuit covering the ice cream as it was cake-like so chewy and firm at the same time.
I wanted to find out what other ice cream sandwiches readers could recommend.

Purity Dairies (Nashville, TN) makes the best ice cream bars.

I love the oreo ice cream sandwiches! The oreo part is all mushy just like I like them!

Mayfield, which can be found in most Southern states, is the best I've had so far--that isn't homemade, of course.

Jacques Torres in DUMBO has the most amazing looking ice cream sandwiches I have ever seen. I was a fool not to get one!

I'm on the It's It bandwagon, too. They are just so yummy! The chewy chocolate covered oatmeal cookies and good quality vanilla ice cream are just too yummy. I only wish the oatmeal cookies had more rasins in them like they used to have. There are only a couple of rasins in each sandwich now.

It's It was sold in only one tiny storefront along the beach in S.F. when I was a child (the 1950's.) Several times a year we would make a pilgrimage to the beach---ostensibly to go to the zoo, but it was really for an It's It. Then they shut it down for years when they tore down all the funky rides and Playland games, and we were out of luck. But eventually, an entrepreneurial type brought it back---and now it is clearly beloved by everyone and widely available in the Bay Area. I think this is a metaphor for many great food products that achieve cult status and eventual commercial success. So why hasn't anyone tried to make the It's It go national?

A P.S. to my comment above. It's It is available on their website by overnight express. The cost: $17 for 24 it's It frozen ice cream sandwiches with $67 postage and handling. Total: $84 for 24, which divided out isn't too hideously expensive if you compare it to a plane trip to S.F.
Has anyone tried the mint or cappucino versions?

For mass produced bars, try the Ben and Jerry's 'Wich cookie sandwiches. The cookies are pretty tasty, especially when compared to Chipwiches.

Teacher....yes to both you don't see the coffee ones that often I prefer the mint to be honest.
I'm in Portland, OR now...there are quite a few shops that carry It's it here.

I'm a fan of Blue Bell ice cream sandwiches. If you are ever in SE Texas, visit the Blue Bell Creamery and take the tour. It's fantastic.

Kim, I'm in PDX too, and am really intrigued by all the It's it raves. Where, pray tell, can they be had around here? (Premature thanks!)

We have been buying Blue Bunny sandwiches, which are okay. I saw some "organic" ones at Costco, and was going to try, but they were $9 a box. a bit pricey. They had a good list of ingredients, so I may break down.

I'm in the south and yes, Mayfield's ice cream sandwiches are very good. I like to get the minis - four bites are just enough!
