Mixed vegetarian crowd NYC restaurant suggestions?
Looking for suggestions for NYC restaurants that have an extensive vegetarian friendly menu (but also serve carnivores). This is for a special graduation dinner for 6; half veg heads/half not. Not interested in vegetarian restos. Thanks!

When i've got a mixed party like that I always shoot for an italian or mexican joint. You can disguise it as not playing favorites to either side and everyone can find something they like.

Thai food! What neighborhood and what sort of place are you looking for? My favorite place is Klong on St. Marks St. It's kind of a crazy block (b/w 2nd and 3rd sts, ie, amidst all the punks and street vendors) but the restaurant is a really funky space and the food is deeeeeeelicious. Everything can be made with tofu, veggies, or mock duck or chicken. www.klongnyc.com If that's not so much your style (or cuisine), please give me more details so I can be of help - I lived in NYC for many years before moving to Charm City so I know of many vegetarian-friendly restaurants.

Becco in NYC midtown on Restaurant Row is a great place for pasta... its owned by Lidia and Joe Bastianich. Think of it as "Poor man's Babbo". They have a $20 all you can eat fresh pasta dinner they do every night with 3 different pastas they bring to the table in fresh batches straight from the saute pan. Its an excellent value. Their $20 wine list is fantastic too. Plenty of vegetarian/fishatarian options on the regular menu.

If you can make it over to Brooklyn Heights, I recomend Waterfalls - it's a lebonese joint that has some of the best veggie entrees and the baba is the best I've tasted, period. Also the grapeleaves kick butt (they have sumac in them).
The best meat entree is the roasted chicken. Everything is very cheap.

Any Indian place is also a good bet for veggies and non-veggies. You can go crazy at one of the places on 1st Avenue or a bit more high scale at Devi (http://www.devinyc.com). Bombay Talkie is good too (189 Ninth Ave., New York, NY 1001, near 21st St.) as is Earthen Oven (http://menupages.com/restaurantdetails.asp?areaid=0&restaurantid=40623&neighborhoodid=0&cuisineid=0)

What is your budget? Do the vegetarians eat fish, or just vegetables, pasta, fruit, etc.? I believe most really good reataurants in NYC will accomodate dietary requests, if you let them know when making a reservation. A fancy sushi place , like Morimoto might work, or Jewel Bako, or Nobu. There's Tabla(Indian influenced), Annisa(small, great and overlooked),Spice Market (SE Asian, could be fun), Mesa Grill(Southwestern, touristy, but reliable, good food), the list could go on and on. More info would help narrow the choices.

I suggest Josie's. It has great veggie and vegan food, as well as organic meats and the best tuna burger in the city.

I would think Asian spots would be good... Indian, Chinese, Thai, Korean, and perhaps Japanese (if they are the fish eating type of veghead)

thanks all for the great suggestions--i'm proud to admit i've hit up all the above named restos before (except waterfalls which i'm dying to go to) & agree that they're all great. becco really is a steal; i like it so much more than del posto (that place's decor and crowd really weirds me out). we ended up going to lupa; geez those "vegheads" eat fish (wish i had known!) thanks all!

I would suggest one thing only: delivery.
When in a pickle, I order online from EatChineseDelivery.com
You can browse menus, customer reviews, and search by cuisine keyword...
Oh, and you even earn free delivery points and can win prizes and cash!
