Question of the Day: Fresh avocado, share your love

I find it weird that there are people who hate avocado even when it's perfectly ripe with its smooth, buttery, creamy texture. I always eat it as naked as possible. Forget avocado mousse cake, ever since I was a kid, my favorite has always been fresh avocado sprinkled with coffee powder and granulated sugar. Avocado smoothies with milk and chocolate condensed milk are very popular here but I prefer mine un mushed (it's the oral aggression thing).

It's very interesting how people from different cultures prepare their avocados. A foreign friend of mine were shocked that Indonesians mainly use it for sweet stuffs, especially in cold dessert while my family were disgusted by guacamole (it's spicy avocado!). I always hate those insipid prawn cocktail with avocado and bland thousand island dressing and I find the basic olive oil+balsamic is rather blah.. Sweet, naked avocado is for me.

So, how do you have yours?

#1 - Sliced, then sprinkled with lemon juice, dash of sea salt and fresh-ground pepper.

#2 - Halved, then stuffed with cold crab salad (my own recipe).

[hands avocado to boyfriend]
[continues eating rest of meal sans avocado]

He will eat most any avocado in most any form. I can't stand the things in any form especially guacamole. So put me on your weird list.

i love avocado sliced with a grilled shrimp salad, avocado plain, guacamole, on a burger, you name it- i love it! although, i'm not sure how i would feel about it in sweet things. a mix of avocado and chocolate makes me shudder.

In Guatemala where I grew up avocados are a staple... eaten any way possible. In soups, on tortillas, with frijoles... it is all delicious. Now I eat one or two a week for lunch... spread on good bread with a little salt. It is better tasting than butter in my opinion...

I love using avocado in place of condiments on sandwiches and burgers. But I also love it cut in half with lots of salt and a spoon!

My favorites are guacamole (I'm a purist, though - only garlic, salt, and lime in mine), and avocado tacos, which are just sliced avocado, salt, jalapenos or hot pepper sauce, and a squeeze of lime in a corn tortilla. I love them! And toast with avocado, salt, and pepper was one of the two meals that kept me alive during college.

Pour a lot of sweetened condensed milk inside an avocado half.....its so sinful.

The wife and I like them on BLTs.

Mmmm. avocado. I like mine with a squeeze of lime and some salt. My daughter makes a wonderfully simple guacamole with avocado, lime, tomato, and jalapeno.

The best crab salad I ever ate sat on a bed of chopped avocado. It was an amazing combination. Guacamole is one of my favorite snacks, especially with spicy corn chips. I make it with chopped garlic, fresh lemon, freshly ground sea salt, cilantro, finely chopped plum tomato, hot peppers and, of course, ripe avocados.

My 102-year-old Uncle Hy still has the original avocado tree in his Long Beach, Calif., yard.

in morocco they make an insane avocado shake with bananas. an unbelievable flavor combination--avocadoes rule!

DocChuck took my answer. Sliced avacado with just salt and pepper is amazing. If I'm feeling up for it, I throw a little sliced avacado on my tuna sandwich.

Avocado ice cream!

I need to be on the weird list with Shea too. Yuck! Just think of my dislike for them as more for you. :-) Your welcome.

avacado, arugala, and chewy bacon sandwiches.

Take one tortilla, spread with refried beans, top with slices of avocado, salsa, lettuce & maybe a little tomato. Mangia.

I use them in any tacos, fideo, tostadas - sliced, not mushed. Plus they are amazing on sandwiches, in salads, alone...

I'm in with the lemon (or lime) and salt crowd. But I also like to slice one up and eat it with a couple of salty, crunchy sourdough pretzels. A welcome addition to any tossed salad, too.

Even after reading the Bell Jar, I still love avocado stuffed with crabmeat. Maybe even more so after reading the book, with the protagonist's recollection of her grandfather smuggling her avocados from his stint at the country club.

Mmmm...sliced in half with some good balsamic poured inside, sprinkled with salt. Also, added to a traditional insalata caprese...yumyumyum...

I loooooove avocados, so long as they haven't been infected with any sort of hot pepper. My newest favorite way of eating them is actually a drink, created by an interior Mexican restaurant here, called an Avocado margarita. It may sound utterly disgusting, but I promise that if you are an avocado fan, you would adore this drink. Yum! What a wonderful way to get potassium. :}

I love it just about any way at all, although I haven't expermented much with the sweet applications. I will eat it right from the halved pieces with a little salt and lemon or lime juice if I have it, not critical. Great in a shrimp salad with lime juice and cilantro. And they send sandwiches over the top. The only way my husband can't stand them is in salads - he has this weird thing about combinations of crunchy with soft textures.

Sliced thin with some Twang! (lemon-lime salt), chili oil, ripe tomato & cilantro -- my mexi-caprese salad.

Sliced thin and eaten like sashimi, dipped in soy sauce with a bit of wasabi.

I have no love to share....I'm on the weird list too. :-(

I am with you 100% I love my avocados naked. Delicious!

I will admit sometimes I do drown my avocados in balsalmic dressng!

Does anybody still call them "alligator pears?"

Any way possible. I am a complete avocado junkie, and living in western MA, I'm very thankful for shipped, out-of-season produce.

My sister in Santa Barbara introduced me to avocado mashed up in cottage cheese. Sounds and looks rather putrid, but tastes wonderful. Try it!

I've never heard of avocado's sweetened... but I love them plain. Me, a half avocado and a spoon and nothing else. Guacamole is good, just as long as it's mildly if at all spicy.

*swoon* I don't think there is any savory way I wouldn't eat avacadoes. One of the Mexican restaurants near my home makes guacamole tacos and tostadas. Very simple, just a crispy corn tortilla, guacamole, lettuce and some Monterey Jack cheese.

When I make my own guacamole, I just scoop them out of their skins, sprinkle them with salt and lemon juice and add a couple of tablespoons of homemade salsa. I leave it pretty chunky.

I've never tried them in sweet applications and, in fact, the only time I've ever seen them in a dessert was when one of my fellow culinary students made an avocado cheesecake. My instructor and I had almost identical palates and he didn't like it, so I didn't try it. Not very adventurous of me I admit, but I just couldn't do it.

I love avocados! I like them just scooped out of their skins and shoveled straight into my mouth. I like them in maki rolls with cucumber and scallions. I like them spread on bread with a little grey salt. I like them in guacamole (avocado, lime juice, salt, onion and serrano chile in mine).

My favorite sandwich is made at a little place called Big G's in Winslow, Maine. It's called a Papa Charlie and is melted cheese, tuna salad, tomato, sprouts and avocado on lavash. Best. Sandwich. Ever.

Well...I have honestly never had avocado...I know, I know...

Prefer the texture of luscious avocados served halved or sliced. Avocado in a salad that boasts lots of tomatoes, peppers, and greens, terrific. A sandwich of avocado, brie, tomato, and lettuce on chewy rustic bread. Another favorite: salmon-avocado maki rolls.

How could I forget my favorite method of avocado ingestion: unagi and avocado rolls.

YUM.
