Question of the Day: Does (produce) size matter?

Those insanely large fruits and vegetables at the grocery store: Do you pick them up or walk on by?

7 Comments:

Definitely walk by... And if I see fruits or vegetables all of the same size, I run by...

walk by - ever have a massive strawberry the size of a clementine? they taste horrible.

It depends on what it is - for instance, I found the largest artichoke I have ever seen when I was at the store the other day, and it tasted just fabulous. However with most fruits, I definitely avoid the giant-sized - like ceforrester said, a lot of them just lose their taste or taste awful :{

However, conversely, I avoid those peeled, bagged, mini-carrots. I'll take my carrots with less processing please thank you. :p

I too just found one of the largest artichokes ever at Whole Foods last week. Must remember to cook it tomorrow.

I agree that it depends on size....a large head of romaine for example, wouldn't necessary be a bad thing....a large zucchini on the other hand....it would only be destined for bread!
I've had some huge tomatoes that were absolutely fabulous....of course they were home grown.

I pass on those oversized fruits like the clementine-sized strawberries and apples the size of softballs. Once, when I lived in Westchester county NY, I used was able to buy Macoun apples at a local farm stand/cider mill. They were small, lopsided, and tasted exactly as an apple should. Last year I saw a sign in the produce dept of my local Kroger for Macouns! I raced over only to discover huge, round apples that looked (and tasted, I bought one) nothing like the originals. I want real, non-engineered fruit!

I don't use my eyes with produce as much I use my hands ands my nose.
Yes that was me smellng lemons and cataloupes at Wegman's last weekend.
Smell the produce. Give it a try really.
