I'm guessing that it's hard to find here because it is traditionally a street food, not packaged. I've never seen it in the U.S., actually.

Was this prompted by yesterday's Dragon Beard candy post on Required Eating? One of the candyaddict.com commenters said in December that, "in NYC, it’s available on Elizabeth & Hester in Chinatown in a store that sells prepared foods." Don't know if that store makes it fresh the way it's supposed to be or sells it pre-made, I'll try and check it out this week. According to eGullet, there are stalls in Flushing that do it, if you're willing to take the 7 out there!

At first glance, you think you're looking at a cotton ball. But upon closer inspection, you'll see the tiny strands of sugary thread. The "beard" is smooth and sweet but not overpowering. It's texture is like biting into a frosted mini-wheat...but certainly more delicate. The real goldmine is the filling and that's where the flavor lies. I believe I had one with coconut and sesame seeds. Heavenly. Don't hold the candy too long. The heat of your fingers/hand will begin to melt the strands together. Not that it doesn't taste good but it loses a bit of that delicate texture since the strands begin to gum up.
I had it (and purchased boxes of it) at the airport on my return trip back to the U.S. Except...I can't remember if it was a return trip from Japan or Korea.
Watching them make the threads, roll up my candies and box them was awesome.

i remember when i was a kid there was a guy who made them on the bowery, near canal...but that was like twenty years ago. they're the best when they are freshly made!! perhaps i'll take the minibus on division st. out to flushing and check that out...
