Question of the Day: What's the farthest distance you've ever traveled for food?

22 Comments:

I'm an author. Back in the day when I was intensely working on my book, I'd occasionally take a Saturday flight (from Boston) to Los Angeles to have dinner at MR CHOW in Beverly Hills. I'd return for an early dinner at MR CHOW on Sunday, then take the redeye back to Boston.

Very insane I know - but a great escape and wonderful meal!

When I was a kid my parents would plan our road trips around a Cracker Barrel location/road map they had picked up years earlier. On some trips we would stop 2, sometimes 3, times in a day. Frightening, I know.

Superkb... my parents did that too!

An approximate 887 miles for Moonlite BBQ in Owensboro, KY. Granted I was technically visiting my family for my aunt's anniversary shindig, but really I was introducing my boyfriend to the best buffet on earth. Mmmmmhmmm.

Dunno about car or plane trips, but last summer I walked a mile each way in blazing heat to buy a particular brand of rootbeer at Trader Joe's. Of course, not two days later I discovered my fancy corner deli also carried Virgil's, tucked away in the furthest corner of the drinks cooler! D'oh.

I know this won't compare to others, but I drove about an hour from my hotel outside of Nashville to get a biscuit from Loveless Cafe.

I once drove from Houston to Lockhart for Kreutz Market BBQ. So worth it.

I've driven about 1 1/2 hrs for a pancake breakfast before...then it turned out the sugar shanty was so packed we didn't even end up having breakfast there!
I too have planned road trips around where the local Cracker Barrels are though. Their hash brown casserole is worth driving a few miles out of the way for!

From Albany, NY to Siracusa Sicily, c. 4500 miles

I've taken the underground to Hammersmith, west London (over an hour from where I live) for some great Polish food. It was great, but nothing I'd make a habbit of.

It wasn't techincally for the food (college reunion) but from NYC to Ithaca for A Pines burger and bloody mary at the Pines on Lake Cayuga. Still nothing like it.

My friend and I would make the 1.5 hour trek from Milwaukee to Chicago for a sack of White Castle burgers in college. Thankfully there are now two locations that are much closer..though not close enough if you ask me.

I usually will only drive less than 2 hours, but when I travel I plan my trip according to places I want to go and eat. I love Egullet for that reason.

I do have a story though that was told to me by a young guy. He wanted to go to Sonic because he loved the commercials and was a big burger fan.
In our neck of the woods we have only Checkers. So he and his step brother and 2 other friends drove to South Carolina to go to a Sonic.
I laughed when he told me and told him there was one closer in Delaware on Route 13. He smiled and said we just love road trips. I agree I love road trips too.
Speaking of road trips anyone ever stray over to Johnny Boy's ribs in La Plata MD, it's almost 2 hours from me and that is a place I go on road trip.

I saved up my money and begged my dad to take me along with him on a business trip from Birmingham, Alabama to New York City with one mission: to eat my way around the city. Best three days of my life.

228 miles to Philadelphia, to fulfill a craving (and a curiosity for an authentic) cheese steak!

I am willing to travel from Indiana to Houston to eat at Papasito's again. I haven't had the opportunity to hop a plane and do it yet but the time will come.

At least once or twice a year we plan a road trip to Chicago to eat at Gino's. I love the deep dish with pepperoni. The husband and his best friend always get sausage on theirs- the big ass sausage patty, no wimpy crumbles for them. I can't stomach it but they're in heaven. Artery clogging heaven.

From Marco Island, FL to Columba, SC for some Maurice's BBQ at Maurice's Piggy Park.

Chapel Hill, NC to Austin and Lockhart, TX., about 1400 miles. Main purpose of trip was work in San Antonio, where I flew to from North Carolina. Second purpose was to bring back Texas food for myself and the rest of the cooks at my other job....Last day in San Antonio, I drove to Austin to have breakfast with my mom and dad at Mi Madres, bought 1 dozen variety pack breakfast tacos, emptied salsa into an empty plastic peanut butter jar, then made a lunch detour through Lockhart for some Smitty's (formerly Kreuz's) brisket and sausage (no sauce necessary), all wrapped and in a cooler until the airport where I carefully packed all into plastic bags, surrounded by other plastic bags with some ice packs. Landed in North Carolina at 9 PM, hoping to get to the restaurant before close to share a feast with coworkers....and my bag got lost. Got them back 48 hours later, really smelled good, but tossing about 5 pounds of that Texan culinary bliss into the trash brought silent tears.

I was going to Chicago to visit my sister (I live in Bedford Hills, NY) and my fiance said "you must have pizza at Giordano's" so we went there and I had a deep dish spinach pie and it was divine--I did it for you, darlin', and I would do it again!

When I was pregnant, I made my husband drive one hour to Nathan's in Coney Island in Brooklyn and one hour back , to bring me a soft shell crab sandwich. It tasted like the best thing I ever tasted in my life!

about 1.5 hours across melbourne, australia for what was reputed to be the best fish and chips in the state. Was well worth it!

I've driven about 2 hours from my home in New Jersey to Connecticut to sample hot dogs. My friends in Connecticut travel 2 hours to Jersey for dogs.
