Question of the Day: What's the best food song?

We've all talked about food in movies before. Now, let's talk music. What's the best mention of food in a song?

47 Comments:

One day when I was chillin' in Kentucky Fried Chicken
Just mindin' my business, eatin' food and finger lickin'
This dude walked in lookin' strange and kind of funny
Went up to the front with a menu and his money
He didn't walk straight, kind of side to side
He asked this old lady, "Yo, yo, um...is this Kentucky Fried?"
The lady said "Yeah", smiled and he smiled back
He gave a quarter and his order, small fries, Big Mac!
You be illin'

- Run DMC

There are so many great food songs, but I really love Saturday Night Fish Fry by Louis Jordan.

Only one. It's bad, but in a good way, Toast with Paul Young

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WJmKStqugMc

Best rhyming couplet is from Betty Boo's song, Let me take you there,

"cashews and schampers"

I've always been partial to De La Soul's "Bitties in the BK Lounge" off De La Soul Is Dead. It name-checks my two favorite foods, pizza and burgers. (lyrics here)

Cibo Matto's Viva! La Woman is my favorite food album.

Homegrown Tomatoes by Guy Clark

http://www.cowboylyrics.com/lyrics/clark-guy/homegrown-tomatoes-12.html

Chorus "Homegrown tomatoes homegrown tomatoes
What'd life be without homegrown tomatoes
Only two things that money can't buy
That's true love & homegrown tomatoes"

you know, i never thought about food songs before. and when i read the question, you know what song popped into my head? "cherry pie" by warrant. bleh.

behold the power of Google:

http://www.mixedup.com/foodsongs.htm

and now i do remember i liked the chili peppers' version of "hot tamales" way back when.

Beans and Cornbread,
Beans and Cornbread had a fight.
Beans knocked Cornbread out of sight.
Cornbread said, "Now that's alright, meet me on the corner tomorrow
night."
"I'll be ready, I'll be ready tomorrow night,"
That's what Beans said to Cornbread . "I'll be ready tomorrow night.

Also, Louis Jordan. That I'll be ready tomorrow night cracks me up.

Yeah, the first thing that popped into my mind was that 'Lemon Tree' song by Peter Paul and Mary. I need some serious help!

I will grudgingly admit that I have a very special place in my heart for Adam Sandler's epic, "Lunchlady Land." Hoagies and grinders, hoagies and grinders... navy beans, navy beans, navy beans...

My favourite food song is an Italian one, by Ornella Vanoni, Rossetto e cioccolato (lipstick and chocolate), about seduction and cooking!
Sorry for the "foreign" complement to this talk!

Fish heads
Fish heads
Rolly polly fish heads
Fish heads
Fish heads
Eat 'em up, YUM!

Classic.

Since De La already got a shout out, I'll have to go with Cab Calloway's "Everybody Eats When They Come To My House"

Not sure I have a favorite, but two that immediately came to mind:

1. "Ding, Fries are done" spoof viral video, that was then spoofed on Family Guy.

2. Jambalaya...any version, I immediately think of Hank Williams Sr. or the wedding scene from steel magnolias.

I guess it shows my age but it has to be "Alice's Restaurant". But I also like "You say tomato", also known as "Let's Call the Whole Thing Off."

Hahaha My aunt used to sing a song about beans...It's incredibly corny, but reminds me of her, and cooking on our camp outs as children...Laugh all you want! Remember we were camping, and as I remember, beans is a staple for campers...

Beans, Beans, the magical fruit!

The more you eat,
The more you toot,

The more you toot,
The better you feel.

So why not eat beans for every meal!

Right now I can't think of anything besides Parmigiano Reggiano! It's just so damn catchy.

Sex and Candy by Marcy Playground of course!

Clare! love it! My brother and I used to listen to Dr. Dimento on the radio late at night and laugh our butts off!

I'm partial to "Pico de Gallo" by Trout Fishing in America:
"It was Cinco de Mayo, and I was down on the bayou
With my good friend Venus de Milo,
We were watchin' Hawaii Five-O
She wanted some French fry-o's, or maybe apple pie-o
And I said why, oh, why-o? We got pico de gallo!"

I LOVE Adam Sandler's "Lunch Lady Land" ! And to see Chris Farley as the Lunch Lady will make you laugh till you cry!

does the "ladybug picnic" song count?

I can't believe no one has brought up either "Cheeseburger in Paradise"

Ladybug picnic! Yes!

I'm a theater person, which is probably why I immediately thought of "I Can Cook, Too" from "On the Town"--

Oh, I can cook, too, on top of the rest,
My seafood's the best in the town.
And I can cook, too.
My fish can't be beat,
My sugar's the sweetest around.
I'm a man's ideal of a perfect meal
Right down to the demitasse.
I'm a pot of joy for a hungry boy,
Baby, I'm cookin' with gas...

Moxy Fruvous' "Johnny Saucep'n" !

The lyrics look lame but the way they sang it was just magic.

Oh, easy one. Prince's "Starfish and Coffee".

Why oh why did "Les Poisson" from The Little Mermaid pop into my head?!?!?

My vote goes to "Save the Bones for Henry Jones ('Cause Henry Don't Eat No Meat)", by Nat King Cole and Johnny Mercer. But in truth, my heart belongs to a the song written by my friend Fred upon returning from the New York Pickle Festival:

Pickles, pickles are delicious
Even tho' they're in a jar.
Bring some home now to your missus
Take them to your local bar.

The one I was going to say, "Alice's Restaurant" was already mentioned and so was "Lunch Lady Land." Nobody mentioned "Choppin' Brocolli" though. There is also "Brown Sugar," even though it's not really about brown sugar. Then the camp classic, "On Top of Spaghetti" always gets 'em going. We used to sing something about "Down by the Paw-paw Patch," when I was in elementary school, even though I still have no idea what a paw-paw is, exactly. Oh, I just remembered, there was a song a while back that was essentially a Mexican restaurant menu set to music, but I can't remember anything more about it.

On top of Spaghetti all covered with cheese
I lost my poor meatball when somebody sneezed..

"C is for Cookie" by Cookie Monster!

Commander Cody and His Lost Planetary Airmen "Two Triple Cheese, Side Order of Fries", "White Castle at 3 AM" by ISM.

"Peas, Peas, Peas, Peas, Eating Goober Peas! Goodness How Delicious, Eating Goober Peas!"

Just for retro jingle sh**s and giggles:

Two all beef patties, special sauce, lettuce, cheese, pickles, onions on a sesame seed bun!

Hold the pickles, hold the lettuce,
Special orders don't upset us,
All we ask is that you let us
Serve it your way!
Have it your way, have it your way...(repeat and fade)

Coooooome toooooooooo
Taca-taca-taca-taca Taco Bell!

"Eat The Rich" by Krokus

Come on a-my house (Rosemary Clooney)
Party on the Mountain (The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band)

"Kitchen Man" by Bessie Smith, but I think it might not really be about food.

A second vote for "Cheeseburger in Paradise!" It's my dad's favorite song---I've always told him we'll dance to THAT at my wedding!

Green Onions, by Booker T. and the MGs.

Peel Me a Grape - Diana Krall.

"Grandma Put Summer In A Jar." Great song, I think sung by John Brown.

Spam monty python
If I knew you were coming I'd have baked a cake Andrew sisters

"Prepare yourself and you know it's a must...gotta have a friend in cheese sauce..."

What? What's that you say? 'Gotta have a friend in Jesus??" Oh, whoops. Well, whatever, it works my way, too!

I love "Lunch Lady Land" too, by Adam Sandler. "Sloppy Joe, Sloppy-sloppy Joe...." classic.
But, in a nod to a post I did a few days ago, who can forget Rapper's Delight by the Sugarhill Gang?
"like a can of beer that's sweeter than honey
like a millionaire that has no money
like a rainy day that is not wet
like a gamblin fiend that does not bet
like dracula with out his fangs
like the boogie to the boogie without the boogie bang
like collard greens that dont taste good
like a tree that's not made out of wood
like goin up and not comin down
is just like the beat without the sound no sound
to the beat beat, ya do the freak
everybody just rock and dance to the beat
have you ever went over a friends house to eat
and the food just aint no good
i mean the macaroni's soggy the peas are mushed
and the chicken tastes like wood
so you try to play it off like you think you can
by sayin that you're full
and then your friend says momma he's just being polite
he aint finished uh uh that's bull
so your heart starts pumpin and you think of a lie
and you say that you already ate
and your friend says man there's plenty of food
so you pile some more on your plate
while the stinky foods steamin your mind
starts to dreamin'
of the moment that it's time to leave
and then you look at your plate and your chickens slowly rottin'
into something that looks like cheese
oh so you say that's it i got to leave this place
i dont care what these people think
im just sittin here makin myself nauseous
with this ugly food that stinks
so you bust out the door while its still closed
still sick from the food you ate
and then you run to the store for quick relief
from a bottle of kaopectate
and then you call your friend two weeks later
to see how he has been
and he says i understand about the food
baby bubbah but we're still friends..."

I sang this one in elementary choir and it's still sticks!

"In today's noodle soup, alphabetic;
there's a fly looking weak and pathetic.

In the noodles he spells out a message!
SOS, send a raft, or canoe.

Look the fly still continue's the message!
And PS, I did not like the soup."
