Tootlach, anyone?
I have a friend who raves about this purportedly traditional Italian dish called "tootlach" (he swears he spells it correctly) that his family makes for holidays. From what I can gather, it's some sort of large dumpling, almost a loaf of bread, that is rolled with cheeses, mushrooms, greens and other fillings and then almost braised in a rich tomato sauce. Regardless, it's supposed to be amazing and I can't ever find any recipes or reference to it online.
Has anyone ever heard of this?
(And, yes, I could just ask my friend, but what would be the fun in that?)

It almost sounds like a variation of calzone - only braised not baked. Hum....

I find that most of the italian translated is slang. Tootlach is missing the end. (consisting of a vowel) Italian cooking is regional. What is called something in one region may be called something else in another. What is made in one region may not be made in another.
Find out what region your friend's "family" is from. We all make a "calzone" type dish for the holidays. What we put in it is again based on the region of those who made it before us.
I had four immigrant grandparents from different regions. The italanglish can sometimes be hard to translate.
