Question of the Day: Lucky Foods ...
It's Friday the 13th, so we're wondering if anyone here has any foods they consider personally lucky — or unlucky for that matter.

Nah, I'm not all that supersticous. Tonight I am cooking a turkey breast in the crock pot with potatoes...nothing lucky or unlucky about that. Pretty tasty though!

Interesting question!
I believe it is good luck to preserve food traditions as a connection to one's past. Even if they are your own traditions that serve to remind you of earlier times.
Since before 6th grade, I have made homemade pretzels. I have continued to make them ever since. Family events aren't the same if I don't bring them. They are a must on the Christmas Eve buffet at my parents, and a welcome care package for my brother who lives out of state. This is my tradition, that others have taken on when I have not made it to the gathering. I make Pretzels because there is meaning, memories & nostalgia behind every batch....
I could tell a story for every tradition and I have a few: I make potato pirogies for Ash Wednesday, black eyed peas on new years, Soda bread and an Irish dish on St. Patricks day, pumpkin cookies (mom's recipe) for halloween, dyed eggs & deviled eggs for easter....and the list goes on.
I do feel maintaining these traditions promotes harmony & balance, which is really a form of luck....This year I was sick over easter, and didn't get the eggs dyed....I'm hoping that doesn't result in 7 years of bad luck!
=)

Hmm. I guess this isn't so much luck but superstition -- I always try to eat something really good before going to the airport to fly anywhere. I never trust the plane to make its way to the destination without falling out of the sky, so my thinking is that my last meal should be a good one.

OK. This, right here, is the smartest thing I've read today. Sign me up for that idea too.
As far as lucky? Breads in general. As in: "I'm lucky if I don't completely screw up making this bread. Again." Or "Gosh, I'm lucky, someone made me some bread."
How it effects anything else in my life is anyone's guess.

Most of my "lucky" foods are New Year's related. Every year I have to somehow incorporate black-eyed peas (Kentucky tradition; I was born there) and sauerkraut (Pennsylvania Dutch tradition; I was raised there) into my New Year's Day dinner to ensure a little good luck for the coming year. For the rest of my year, depending on what's on my plate, I just feel lucky to be eating something delicious.

Today, I will go out of my way to eat rabbit. Figure eating at two rabbits feet will bring me double the luck on such an ominous day. Wonder what the rabbit will be eating for good luck? He better be quick.

Half an hour before a test I eat one piece of toast and have a small cup of coffee. I didn't think it was a big deal until once I forgot to do it and it made me nervous during the entire test...
