Vanilla Question

I noticed in the "What won't you skimp on" question that a couple of people mentioned vanilla...but not in the form of extract...they mentioned beans or paste. I do buy beans & make my own extract, but I've never used the beans straight in baking. For those that do, how do you do that, just use the inner bean in place of the extract straight?
