Good place to eat--healty--near Imperial Theater?

14 Comments:

when did Serious Eats become a place to get dining advice in New York?

The Serious Eaters love giving restaurant advice, courtesy of the Serious Eats staff and our community of passionate eaters, not just in NY but all over the country. The Imperial Theater is on 45th Street, right? Esca is an Italian seafood restaurant on 43rd St. just west of Minth Avenue. It features great, simple fresh fish preparations: terrific pastas, raw fish Italian style called crudo, and wonderful whole and filleted fish dishes. I may be biased because I just wrote a book with the chef co-owner Dave Pasternack, but I think you will really like it.

Thank you so much Ed, my father loves seafood, so that sounds like the perfect place!

I'm sorry if I transgressed the bounds of the website, I only posted because quite often it's hard to find something that's not terribly touristy in the theater district, and I thought I had seen similar posts about dining advice in other areas of the country.

I've found Serious Eats to be a great place to get any kind of dining advice.

It's all about food, right?

HeartofGlass, you most certainly did not transgress the bounds of SE. Our goal is for our users to discover and eat as much delicious food as possible, so offering restaurant advice is, as baboo said, right up our alley.

While, obviously, SE is an appropriate place to ask for dining advice, it might be nice to mention that you're talking about the Imperial Theater in NYC. There are theaters named that in other cities, you know.

Respectfully, I think that it would have been more polite to ask for clarification about my original post, than to snap at me for being overly NYC centric.

To get back to my original post--I'm willing to eat fish for the sake of family peace, but I usually don't eat animal protien--are there any good Chinese or vegetarian places in the area? Near the Imperial--in NYC ;)

For asian vegetarian, there's Zen Palate on 663 Ninth Ave. (at 46th St), New York, NY 10036. I find that even non-vegetarians enjoy their menu.

We went to the 9th Ave. Zen Palate once, and that once was once too often. The food, in a word: Horrible! In my view, it should be avoided like the proverbial plague.

For vegetarians, I recommend Uncle Nick's, the taverna-style Greek restaurant, on 9th Av., b/t 50th & 51st Sts. Very good food and plenty of vegetarian-friendly items on the menu, including an excellent vegetable kebob. Carnivores and pescatores will be also be satisfied with such options as grilled lamb chops and whole grilled fish.

I once reviewed the Ninth Ave. Zen Palate location for the Daily News, and I didn't love it. Uncle Nick's is solid, and Pam Real Thai food is good but not exactly health food.

HeartofGlass, I hope you don't think it was I who snapped at you. I merely suggested that, perhaps, it would have been more clear to mention that you were referring to the NYC theater.

zenith restaurant on 48th & 8th is wonderful! It's pretty much all vegetarian but I think they might have fish. The food is absolutely delicious though.

Sorry for a selfish update, but I sometimes get annoyed when people DON'T update because I'm always curious when people ask for advice!

Esca doesn't have reservations until...well until my father's second born can take him out ;) But I did make reservations at Madeline's close by, which is a French Bistro but had a veggie selection!

I'd really love to try Zenith or Zen but I don't think that would go over very well with my folks, who tend to get scared if dinner doesn't have animal protien! So I think a French place with a veggie option is good for a family truce!

HeartofGlass, I welcome your update! But please share your opinion of Madeline's.
