Eating "well" with a 3 YR old in NYC. Your suggestions...

8 Comments:

What about the Peanut Butter Co. or the restaurant that just serves mac and cheese reviewed in the Times?

S'Mac is probably the mac and cheese place you are thinking of and certainly is kid-friendly. I can't speak from experience, but I imagine most restaurants would be accommodating of your party especially if you dine early. A few more suggestions in this thread...

Kecia: The thread Alaina mentions *is* a good place to start. You could also try Gastrokid, a blog about eating "well" with kids. The kids also happen to eat well. Don't know if your child is a mini gourmand like some of these kids today, but the site might help.

What about dim sum? I loved it as a kid because everything came in little baby plates and I particularly enjoyed anything shaped into a ball. Maybe try Jin Fong or Sweet n Tart in Chinatown or Chinatown Basserie for more grown-up dim sum.

Some kid friendly joints that have good food include: EJ's (several locations), Big Daddy's Diner (Park & 19th), and CInema "Cafe". All pretty much diner food no matter what Cinema calls itself), yes, but some steps above. Don't laugh, but for a while we were going to Benihana on 55th with my nephews (3 and 1) and the food really was good. Exactly as I remembered it as a child, but still, surprisingly good. And that place is insanely kid friendly.

There are many places in NYC where parents can eat well and which welcome little ones or where bringing them along poses absolutely no problem. Here are a few:

Landmarc - http://www.landmarc-restaurant.com

Otto - http://www.ottopizzeria.com

Blue Smoke - http://www.bluesmoke.com

Katz's - http://www.katzdeli.com

Most restaurants in NYC will be welcoming to a well-behaved three year old. I take my son everywhere and have never had a problem. I do not, however, look for places with kid menus. He can enjoy the same food we do. I agree with the comments above that it is best to go on the early side if you anticipate any problem but otherwise, the world is your oyster. Otto is a great suggestion, might be better and less noisy at lunchtime. Bluesmoke may also be worth looking into. You might also consider Noodle Pudding - great Italian restaurant in Brooklyn Heights. Many of the places mentioned in other comments are more kid-oriented but it doesn't sound like that is what you are looking for. Check out my blog for other ideas.

Hampton Chutney on the Upper West has a great play area for kids. It's perfect for a great lunch - conduct a meeting while the munchkin builds a tower of blocks.
