Better the next day

I'm not a fan of leftovers but some things definitely taste better the next day, like quiche. What else do you think tastes better the next day?

28 Comments:

Lasagne and all things with tomato sauce. Chili. Potato salad. Bread pudding. Pumpkin pie.

Gingerbread and shepherds pie.

Cold sesame noodles.

Lasagna and chili, definitely.

Macaroni salad. I tried for years to match my aunt's results and it was only until I had to prepare a quantity of salad in advance that I discovered the letting it sit overnight was the missing step.

Any Indian curry dish.

Another lasagna here. Also, I've found that many dishes that contain a mix of bold spices and/or herbs really come into their own the next day. There's a vegetable couscous I love, for example...haven't made it for ages, but I include as big an assortment of vegetables as possible, raisins, almonds, dried mint, curry, cinnamon. (Need to check my notes. I adapted a Moosewood recipe.) This is so much better after the flavors meld for 24 hours.

I am a big fan of leftovers and think most foods that taste great the first time, taste better the second!

Guess it depends on your tastes...bold seasonings like I prefer age well.

short ribs (except Korean BBQ style, or any other grilled style)

pie.
for breakfast.

Leftover Chinese food is the best breakfast. As the food sits in the fridge overnight something magical happens and dumplings, white rice, moo shu, and sesame beef turn into the perfect thing to toss into a hot pan and crack an egg over.

Definitely leftover Christmas dinner (would that be Thanksgiving dinner in the US?). Bubble and squeak made with leftover roast spuds, veg and (essential) bread sauce, served with cold turkey and chestnut stuffing - knocks spots off the original hot meal. Cheers from your greatest UK fan!

Pie for breakfast, Amen. Brisket, chili, chicken soup, and pizza I don't even put in the fridge. I just put it on our cake plate, and then heat it in my toaster oven the next morning. All right, it doesn't taste as good as it does right out of the oven, but it's still damn fine.

banana bread

Potato salad, macaroni salad, tuna salad, lasagna, stews, split pea soup, most cakes and pizza toppings taste better, but the crust suffers.

I think Thanksgiving leftovers are better than the original dinner, too. While I'm eating my turkey dinner I'm wishing it was a turkey sandwich.

Chili and everything that I make in my slow cooker. I know some people think this is wrong, but I love leftover fried chicken straight out of the fridge!

Meatloaf. I usually cook it, let it cool and throw it in the fridge. Next day cut a thick cold slice and put it in a hot non-stick pan and fry it up quick with cheese and make a sandwich with it. whew....that is the best way to eat it.

Spaghetti.....covered in sauce and fried in a liberal amount of butter in a cast iron frying pan the next day.....best lunch in the world!

Cold roast chicken. On a crusty baguette with lots of mayo.

i second the curry.

frozen pizza is just butter cold

Tuna casserole, chili, most soups.

My special recipe for black bean-white corn salad (dressed with olive oil, lime juice, cumin, pepper, scallions, etc)...it must marinate overnight to taste juuuust right.

I find that Chinese food tastes fantastic the next day. Expecially the fried rice! Sometime if you heat it right, pizza can always taste better, but you have to heat it in the oven so the crust will get toasty as opposed to putting it in the microwave for soggy crust.

Jules, your cold roast chicken and mayo baguette is even better than my Christmas leftovers. Totally sublime!
