Best tamales in NYC? (Closer to UES the better)

Hi,
Does anyone know of spots for good tamales in the city? I went to one restaurant in in Murray Hill recently that was asking $6 for ONE tamale! Not one order, but a single tamale. Mind boggling. I'm not saying they need to be cheap, I just wanted to vent about that.

Thanks

when they have them, El Maguey y la Tuna on Houston b/w Attorney and Ridge has great tamales in addition to amazing food and cheap pitchers of sangria.

Also, Pacifico in Boerum Hill (Pacific St b/w Smith and Court) has really good tamales that come with an amazing side of smashed up nachos (I can't describe it right, but it's deeeeelicious).

Most Mexican grocers sell them on the weekends. If you're on the UES, why not go up to Spanish Harlem where there are a ton of Mexican restaurants and grocers. Also, I believe Zaragoza in the East Village has them on the weekends as well. I know this may sound sacrilege, but Trader Joe's frozen ones aren't that bad, especially if you steam them.

My favorite tamales, at the moment, are from a cart underneath the 61st St. - Woodside Station on Roosevelt Ave. on the 7 line. The family is from Oaxaca and they sell a Oaxaqueno style tamal (huge) in a banana leaf for $3. They also make the style in a corn husk that are cheese or chicken, spicy or mild for $1. They're fantastic. Take some home.

I eat at a tiny hole-in-the-wall place that I'm reluctant to tell anyone about. I used to eat Tamales at a place across from Manganaro's on the west side midtown. Since they closed I've been looking for a place and found one at 47 1st Ave. between 2nd and 3rd called Puebla Mexican Food and Coffee Shop. I only post this because I searched review sites to find a good tamale but was disappointed in the lack of results. The pork tamales are great here (they serve chicken and veggie too). Nice amount of meat and good size for $5 for 2. I always get salsa verde (green sauce made of jalapenos) which is KICKING HOT and believe me I eat a lot of hot. Like my dad used to say, when you feel the hairs on the back of your head standing up and tingling it is hot. The also serve the regular fare of Mexican staples like burritos, enchiladas tacos and platters but this place serves breakfast too so if you want a breakfast burrito try it here. Very nice people there (they are Mexican) and they just repainted the inside which is clean but simple. Very small place, not a "restaurant" more a coffee shop like the name suggests. Please don't abuse it because I want to get food as quickly as I'm used to getting it :D
