NYC: Yogurt Search
I saw a TV show sometime ago featuring a small local shop run by Eastern European who sold, amongst other things, homemade yogurt. The shop was located somewhere in the Lower east Side , NYC. The yogurt is supposed to be phenomenal and its been done nonstop for about 100 years since the first batch was produced. I was wondering if anyone knows about this shop (name and address)? I would love to go and have a taste of this yogurt but cant remember the name or address. All I can recall is the way they made the yogurt and how amazingly delicious it looked.
Thanks.

Yoghurt Place II at 71 Sullivan street is on the West Side and has fantastic yoghurt. But I think the BEST yoghurt you can get in NYC is sold in only two places- at the Greenmarket at Union Square (from June-early March) and at Saxelby Cheesemongers. It is sheep milk yoghurt made by a NY State farm called Three Corner Field Farm.
Silky texture- not as sour cream like as the greek yoghurt that everyone buys at the supermarket (FACE)... just perfect. Saxelby's might be getting it through June via mail- not sure. But definitely get some when the farmer is back at the market.

(Saxelby is in the Essex Market on the LES, right off the Essex/Delancy F/JMZ stop.)

have you ever tried kesso yogurt, made in elmhurst? it tastes almost feral.

I like the thought of feral yogurt, freed from its shackles at last, stalking through the woods, attacking defenseless young containers of sour cream...

My food lover O.C.behavior had me restless, but I found the one I was looking for, who would've thought it was at Yonah Schimmel's Bakery 137 E. Houston St.,
"The knishery’s yogurt is still made from the same culture that was imported from Romania in the late 19th century.
Doses from Schimmel’s dairy of youth run $1.75 for an at-table glass, $2.25 for a 10-ounce takeout container, $5 a quart." (source: http://nypress.com/print.cfm?content_id=8941)
Mixed opinion on the knish but I'm heading there to satisfy my Yogurt Thirst anyways! I will stop by Essex Market to try the other recomendation, maybe grab a chunk of cheese or two!
What is and where to hunt for Kesso yogurt? Where in Astoria can I find that Greek delight mentioned above? Please let me know if possible I would love to try it out.
Next quest: make my own natural wholesome soft curd.
Thanks for all the info supplied. Much much appreciated. Officially in love with Serious Eats.com.

I've lived just a few blocks from Yonah Schimmel's for 25 years and never knew this, which is why I love this neighborhood--or what remains of it.

BaHa, I live a few blocks from Yonah Schimmel's too! We should go try their yogurt together!

What sashad said about 3 Corner Field Farm's yogurt. Sublime, especially with a little Grade B maple syrup poured over it.

Well, you will find a great yogurt in the cheese counter at Titan Market in Astoria. It is made by Skotidakis in Canada from goat and cow's milk. They only have it in bulk and sell it in containers. It is strained in the Greek / Bulgarian style and is terrific. I prefer it to the more commonly found Fuge brand. Try it. You'll never return to watery grocery store yogurt. A link to the makers website is:

Titan is on 31st Street between Astoria Blvd. and the 30th Ave. stops on the N train. They also have an outstanding selection of Fetas, other Greek imports and their olives are half the price of some well known Manhattan retailers.
Enjoy.
