What's the deal with whole wheat Krispy Kremes?

i love them just the way they are - bleached flour and all. putting some whole grains in them doesn't negate any of the fat, refined sugar or white flour, so i don't know who they think they're kidding....

it's just another marketing ploy, I do believe.

Yeah, it seems dumb to me. I think it's for people in denial, those same folks that get non-fat frozen yogurt with hot fudge and whipped cream on top. But I did a bite of one yesterday and it wasn't too bad. If I want a doughnut though, I'd rather just enjoy the real thing, and not try to healthify it in some way.

I had one yesterday, too. It wasn't that bad. There's so much glazing and sugar on it that you don't even notice it's whole wheat. I took a picture of the donut's innards here.

I agree, what's the point? Perhaps there are people who prefer the texture of whole wheat to white. But they're probably not going to eat at Krispy Kreme.

This is a doughnut having an identity crisis. It's no wonder Americans have forgotten how to eat well when large corporations serve up this kind of stuff. If you want a doughnut, eat a doughnut and enjoy it! But let's not try to persuade anyone that the addition of whole wheat flour makes any significant difference in its nutritional value.

I seriously wonder what impact this has on people who happen to be less informed in nutrition and diet. Do people recognize that is largely, as Ed says, a marketing ploy? Or will people actually order this doughnut believing that perhaps it's a less guilty pleasure? I think that sadly, the answer lies in the waistbands of our Expando-matic slacks.

At a mere 10% fewer calories (180 as opposed to 200), it's got a long way to go to persuade me that there are actual health benefits to ordering the whole wheat version as opposed to the classic. If the whole wheat flour provides more fiber, that's going to make a texture difference, and to me half the point of eating a Krispy Kreme is that it's so light and airy.

Sorry but light and airy doesn't really describe KK to me. Last time I had them, they were like leaden sugar bombs.
