Question of the Day: Ever consider a food-related tattoo?

Yesterday, Lia mentioned a chicken-wing tattoo and then got to wondering aloud: "Do you think any Serious Eats readers have food tattoos?"

"Beats me," I said.

"How 'bout a QotD?"

So, readers: Anyone? Anyone even consider it? It's not like it hasn't been done before.

my husband wants one, although he's not sure of what yet.

me, i'm not into tattoos in general. i'm the only one of my friends who doesn't have a tattoo. it's the needle thing, just cannot do it. besides, i think tramp stamps are fugly.

I've considered it but have no clue what I'd get. A whisk? A mixing bowl? Would it even be distinguishable? And where would I put? Honestly, getting one in your nether regions or the middle of your back where no one will see it except your lover or the doctor seems like a waste of time and money.

Regardless, it is a moot point as I'm too wimpy to really go through with it.

French Tart: your 'tramp stamp' comment is hilarious!

Bacon! But then I'd have an extra hard time getting buried in a Jewish cemetery.

the chef at the meeting house restaurant in Amagansett NY has a fabulous array of root vegetables and mushrooms (chanterelles!) around his forearm - love it.

Guys could get funny and do a Wendy's parody with a "Here's the beef" tattoo strategically placed on the body. It's not a pickle, but still kind of food related.

I've considered this very thing for a few years. I am open to the idea and I'm waiting for the "ah-ha" moment when the perfect image reveals itself to me. However, I do experience phantom sharp pains in my upper arm everytime I pass the Purple Panther Tatoo Parlor on Sunset Blvd.

I don't have one, nor would I get one, but I will add what I would get if I did (did you catch all that?): I would do some sort of skull and crossbones with a Wusthof knife and a spoon crossing under the skull. Your mileage may vary.

I just did a quick search and found this here http://goodeats.dyns.net/viewtopic.php?p=309544&sid=89e7e24e7925ced983cc78fbf68a3d61

I would consider it, and I have. I have happy wine grapes on my forearm.

David Cross, the comedian, has an especially good one: a pig eating its own (bbq'd) rib. Kind of sinister, but undeniably awesome.

Only if it was an edible tattoo.

I don't know about the tattoo, but I'm in love with a perfect one-inch scale model of a chef's knife. Sold as a pendant at Random Gifts in the East Village.

Add me to the list of those who dislike tattoos. I associate them with the Holocaust, slavery, and cattle branding.

I had one all planned out. It was to have been a cornucopia that started on my outside, upper calf and pointing down and inward with all sorts of fruits and vegetables tumbling out and over my ankle and down the top of my foot. I wanted the name of my culinary academy and all of the restaurants where I have cooked worked into the weave of the basket. However, since I was injured I began to experience edema and I don't want a tattoo anywhere that swells and shrinks so much. Now I think I'll eventually get it on my thigh instead.

P.S. Those of you who don't like tattoos certainly have the right to express your opinion, but you don't have to be mean about it. I mean, the term "tramp stamps" is just plain rude when describing an often beautiful art form that has been around for several millenia.

There was a slideshow of chef's tattoos in the NY Times a while back...
(unfortunately I think you have to be a TimesSelect member to view)

I have long considered one since becoming a chef, and have finally done it. Of course it takes a while to finally decide what you want to have done, but I am really happy with what I came up with:

I have a duck on my right upper arm with a heart and a banner that says DUCK FAT, and below that a bracelet of the native chilepetins- they are small, like THai bird chilies, and have heart shaped leaves, so my husband's name is in one of the leaves. Left arm is a grape bunch with "Zinfandel" above and "Primitivo" below. Bracelet for that arm will likely be basil and tomatoes, but I am also looking for someone willing to do the Time Magazine portrait of Ms. Julia on my back.
