Out of fashion food: do you really think it can exist?
I was reading a comment on an Italian food blog the other day, and someone wrote that avocados are out of fashion, so seventies (well, this is Italy!) and not at all modern. I, of course, do not agree, but do you think some kind of vegetables or food can be out of fashion?

If it was a bad idea to begin with, its days are numbered. Chocolate-covered ants come to mind. And tofutti.

Maybe certain styles of cooking can seem out of date...but a staple ingredient like avocado? that is ridiculous!

I think it can exist ... unfortunately...I thought avocados were still a popular item.
I collect antique cookbooks, some as old as 127 years, others are retro books from the 50's, and 60's...So many wonderful foods and recipes exist out there.
I don't appreciate fads, but rather the exact oppocite.

Hm...I'd say sun dried tomatoes were kind of a fad that has faded. Still great and used, but not as ubiquitous as they once were.
But real food fads that have passed, yes! How about casseroles and jello molds with savory ingredients?

I could care if something is out of fashion. I eat what tastes good ...today , tomorrow or 20 yrs from now!

Of course. As living styles and food cultures evolve, so do food offerings, i.e., jbrach's reference to the jello salads of our (well, my) youth. how many families still can fruits and veggies from their gardens, compared to the ubiquitous mason jar stockpiles of the past? homemade pickles? buckwheat pancakes at restaurants? kool-aid made with a cup (!) of sugar? cheese-whiz? casseroles topped with crushed corn flakes and potato chips? ok, ok, maybe I still crave some of these (so-called) foods, but their popularity has waned tremendously.

i imagine chicken a la king (which i love) is out of date. rumaki too maybe. warm chocolate cake w/raspberry sauce. cuisine minceur. but one thing i've noticed is whenever i start to get a yen for something -- like a weird casserole 6 mos. later some chef is re-inventing it.

Aspic and other gelatinous foods. I still like raspberry jello with light fruit cocktail in it. It is so refreshing. Pudding, I love pudding. Egg custard just baked in a ramekin mmmm.
I still make pickles. I make fresh pickles and when the jar gets empty I make some more. Store bought pickles are full of nitrates. I will take my nitrates in my wine and deli meats thank you.
I don't like avacados but I love Guacamole. Go figure.
