Montreal Bagels Exposed
Please put to rest immediately the myth that Montreal bagels are superior to New York City bagels. Montreal bagels are good, yes, but they're closer to sweet pretzels than they are true bagels. Sure, we'll be back to Montreal to enjoy the bagels again, but don't let anyone ever tell you that "Montreal is the world capitol of good bagels." Not true.

I guess this is just a random bagel rant.

Well there's an ongoing debate about whether Montreal bagels are better than New York City bagels. Many people claim Montreal bagels are superior. I think David's just saying, after a recent visit there, that it's not true. Any Montreal bagel supports out there to challenge this?

They're good, just different. Cakier consistency and definitely sweeter which is no suprise as they are boiled in honey-sweetened water. Depends on what you're in the mood for, but with CC and lox they wouldn't have a chance over NY bagels.

I am fairly sure that the honey-sweetened water is traditional; what we are eating in New York now is not. When I was growing up in Brooklyn, all bagels had a slightly sweet grace note. I had my last bagel like that in 1981; when I went back for more a week or two later, the store was gone. It was like witnessing the death of the last dodo.

pizza bagels are the best.

Yes, Guilty, only thing better is whitefish focaccia. Jeez.

NY bagels are super-sized for American tastes. Montreal bagels are their older, wiser, skinnier cousins. Nothing like picking up a brown paper bag of half a dozen hot and fresh sesame-seeded Montreal bagels and a tub o' cream cheese, and devouring them on a bench in a pretty little park on a bench by the fountain, trying to remember your high school French so you can understand the mommies strolling with their children around you.

Wow, my wife and I did that exact same thing - mostly because there's nowhere to sit in the bagel place. Damn cold in that park.

I have a lot of close family in Montreal and whenever we visit, we never leave without armfuls of bagels (and tummies full of smoked meat!). I think we're comparing apples and oranges here. As it's been said, Montreal bagels are sweeter, slightly chewier, skinnier and seedier. Personally, I think they require more cream cheese as well, but I'd take a Montreal bagel any day!
