PrintMagnolia Cupcakes in NYC--Overrated or Underrated?
I brought my aunt from Chicago to NYC this weekend and because of a NYT article about red velvet cake, we spent 25 minutes standing in line today to taste a Magnolia cupcake. I want to know--was this a waste of time? Are magnolia cupcakes really THAT good?

I honesty can't stand Magnolia. Sugar Sweet Sunshine is much, much better.

Couldn't agree more with coconutlime. SSS is the best in NYC, but it's not fair to compare other cupcakes to ones of those caliber. On their own, Magnolia's are pretty great, but compared to SSS's pumpkin or lemon, they are nothing worth waiting in line for.

Did you get cupcakes, or did you leave the line? If you stayed and you liked them, then it wasn't a waste of time. Who cares what other people think?
Having said that, I'm in the minority that actualls prefers the super sweetness of Magnolia's cupcakes—the sugary icing makes me feel like I'm 8, in pigtails at a friend's birthday party! Nostalgia makes any treat taste even better, really. Sugar Sweet Sunshine's cupcakes are tasty but if I'm going in there (I live five minutes away and go at least once a week), the banana pudding is a full order of magnitude tastier than any cupcake on the planet. And I don't usually like bananas or pudding!

I'm in the SSS camp for the cupcakes and especially the pudding. Magnolia isn't worth the hassle and is too sweet for me.

Magnolia is way overrated in my book, especially when you have seriously authentic bakery competition not more than three or four blocks away (claude's and roccos). Give me a canoli or a caramel cream puff any day. And for cupcakes, I am a big advocate of the cupcake cafe.

Magnolia Bakery is overrated, as are most of the wellknown cupcake specialists(Billy's Bakery, Cupcake Cafe, etc.) I actually think Buttercup Bakery cupcakes are a little better than Magnolias. I make a better white cake, and chocolate cake in my own cupcakes.

Magnolia bakery cupcakes are mediocre at best. People are still falling for the Magnolia"mystique". I make better cupcakes than they do. I think Buttercups' cupcakes are slightly better. I guess I'll have to try SSS.

Magnolias cupcakes are good. The frosting is a little odd. But good. If you want an amazing cupcake go to Sugar Sweet Sunshine on Rivington
(get a cupcake and a cup of banana pudding)

Not. We had to wait in line for quite a while also and I made a big deal out of them because the person we were with from NYC was a huge devotee. I found the cake quite dry and the icing was way over the top , sharp pain the the jaw kind of sweet. I would try any of the other dozen bakeries nearby next time.

i think most of their stuff is yucky. i'm a big fan of the cupcakes from yura and crumbs.
