What happened to yellow cake with chocolate icing?

In the old days (late 1970s, perhaps early 1980s) any self-respecting coffee shop in New York City sold white or yellow cake with chocolate icing by the slice. Every coffee shop counter sported a two- or three-layer white cake with chocolate icing under a plastic dome. Nowadays one finds only chocolate cake with chocolate icing. Why did my favorite coffee shop dessert disappear?

I'm afraid you can't find that cake at Greek coffee shops any more. You can order a great one at either Soutine or Two Little Red Hens in NY, though.
