I hate the term GOURMET. When we built our home they kept saying gourmet kitchen and I kept saying "custom" kitchen. Gourmet to me is an old word that means "wow this is really special and food related". Today I think its a misnomer that everyone throws around to suit their marketing needs.
For people I like epicurean, foodie, food snob. Picky eaters unite.

so do you prefer to cook or to eat yummy food - I LIKE to eat nice food but I LOVE to cook and then eat nice food... just for me means more that I have made it first...

Whenever I hear the word "gourmet", I know what will follow will be pretentious, and generally ignorant, twaddle.

I'm with JerzeeTomato on this one, "gourmet" has totally lost its meaning. You can say "gourmet shoes" and people will not raise an eyebrow.

When I say the word "gourmet" I usually make the double quote fingers with it. Compared to the foods that were available when my mom was cooking, everything could be considered "gourmet" these days.

I hate the words gourmet, foodie and chowhound. I just like to eat well, very well, from all cultures at all price points.

IMO, gourmet means that the cook takes care to select the absolutely freshest and best quality ingredients available that day and prepares them in a thoughtful way that highlights the perfection.
Gourmet doesn't have to be so overwrought as the top restaurants (French Laundry, Per Se, El Bulli, etc.) seem to think most times. That kind of dining has an ADD feature to it that is like a roller coaster for tastebuds. Fun, but you probably don't want to do that every day.

Calichef... hey I really like that especially the fresh daily bit ... its like following the daily rhythms of the planet...working with it instead of against ... oh dear now I am off on one ..
