What are the best restaurant picks for downtown Vancouver?
I'm staying in Vancouver Saturday night and have never been to the city. I live in NYC, so I feel like I have access to a lot of good restaurants, but I'd love something that's unique to Vancouver, a local favorite. Simple-but-good or not-fancy-but-delicious are both great traits.

I can't really say what's superior to New York, but one area Vancouver really shines are various Pacific Rim cuisines; if you're determined to stay downtown I would try one of the Japanese izakaya places, my personal favorite is Guu (don't just take my word for it, take Stewart's); Hapa Izakaya is also good. If you venture just outside the downtown core, Vij's and Phnom Penh are both great.

i have a recent list here:

which meet your requirements of simple but good, etc but it would be helpful to know what you don't like and what you get in NYC and SF that you don't need to get elsewhere

I don't remember exactly where these places are, but I ate at Sun Sui Wah (dim sum - probably does seafood in the evening) and Elixir, an upscale restaurant in a hotel in Yaletown. Everything I ate in Vancouver was excellent, and I especially remember delicious Indian food, but unfortunately I can't remember what restaurant that was. You might want to check out Beyond Robson, which is a blog about non-touristy stuff in Vancouver.

Even though you can duplicate the experience in NYC, Vancouver has great Japanese, Chinese, Southeast Asian and Indian restaurants. Tojo's for instance has killer sashimi
One of the best restaurants I've eaten in anywhere is C Restaurant on Howe Street. I had a wild slow roasted salmon main that still brings tears of joy to my eyes.
