Recollections re: DDL Foodshow (or Food Show)?
I'm thinking of the flagship location of Columbus Ave. between W 81 and W 82 (NYC), back in the early 80s. I was surprised that the architectural tome 'New York 2000' makes no mention of DDL's usage of the space (now Calle Ocho restaurant, previously Main Street restaurant, and prior to that??). This place was a big deal when it first opened, but failed to gain suction on the Upper West Side even though aesthetically it blew away Zabar's (and was more expensive). Any recollections of the place would be appreciated.

I remember it well. Marble floors, the epitome of 80's excess. Everyone thought it was going to put Zabar's out of business. It did in a certain way beget Giada DeLaurentis, Dino DeLaurentis' daughter? granddaughter?

i was so young when i was asked by a family friend to sample boars head meat products in this place , and i just marvelled at this unfathomable maze of space and foods all so new to me then. i have often thought of that experience in time, and find it so peculiar that back then i had absolutely no idea that i would on day be a chef in my own right, and would dearly love to have the chance to revisit those isles of wonder, now that i can professionally appreciate all that it held to offer.

DDL Food Show will always have a place in my heart as it was the first place in the US where I could buy fiore di latte that was made fresh daily and right on their premises. I would drive from New Haven to the upper west side just to visit the DDL Food Show as often as possible from the day they opened until they closed. Of course, I love Zabar's, but for me, ddl was like attending The Met, and Zabar's was like a trip to Lincoln Center, each a gift, but in different ways.
