Question of the Day: What food can't you live without?

We suspect that some of our readers may be giving up something—maybe even a favorite food item—for Lent. Which got us thinking—what food can't you live without? If you're observing Lent, are you giving up anything edible that you're going to miss?

Pasta... Sorry, I'm Italian, and if I do not eat pasta for more than 7 days I begin to fell grumpy, bad, weak, sad...

And I'm Italian, but I do not observe lent: never understood what different really makes to avoid certain food...

Mexican/southwestern ingredients. I cannot live without tacos, cilantro, avocado, peppers, etc. Also I would have a problem giving up sushi.

Salty buttered popcorn. Huge bowls of it.

Chocolate.
For lent I am giving up eating candy out of my coworkers candy dish. Not a great habit to snack on candy all day.

Pizza. I'm sure I could go without for Lent, but I don't observe lent so I don't have to and you can't make me!

Raw oysters. I don't know what it is, but I can't bear to go more than a month. It's torture during the summer because I still adhere to the old saying of "no oysters in the R months." I need to get my fill in the next two months before I have to take a too-long break.

Cheese. I love every kind and variety.

@AuntJone: We weren't trying to make you observe Lent! ;)

I'm going to give up red meat, which means (gargh!) burgers. I guess I'll have to do a series of faux-meat burger options on A Hamburger Today.

Maldon Sea Salt. If that doesn't qualify as a food, Parmesan.

bread, pasta, potatoes and rice. thank god atkins no longer rules

pasta, rice, potatoes and bread. thank god the atkins thing is over.

I'm with lilartist - cheese! Whenever I have the munchies and can't find anything else ready to eat and don't feel like making anything, I head for a hunk o'cheese in the fridge and start slicing away. I especially love stinky cheeses!

Probably chocolate, although some other types of candy can substitute in a pinch (like caramel). Luckily, I don't observe Lent, so I don't have to give anything up.

Another cheese fanatic. I put it on everything...

Tuna, rugbrød (it's very dark, dense, sour Danish rye bread) and carrots. And chickpeas. But I don't observe Lent either, and have no intention of giving these things, or anything else, up.

I'd like to say bbq, but I find I miss having fries the most when I'm without them.

Beef. Beef with Borsari seasoned salt.

good ol' bread.

Bread, cheese. Could live off of it if I had to.

ice cream/frozen yogurt. i usually can't go a day without it. preferrably ben and jerry's cherry garcia frozen yogurt. i could NEVER give it up!

Roast pork. Cha siu. Anything at dim sum.
Chips.
Ice cream.

I have to agree. Bread and cheese. The stinkier the cheese the better, except mozarella di buffala which although not stinky is a delight..any type of cheese will do. Love these two!!

Good bread, pizza, dark chocolate... oh and smoked gouda cheese.

I was a lacto vegetarian for several years so in a pinch I could do it again but I can't do without the yummies listed above. Life wouldn't be worth living!

Kashi GoLean and GoLean Crunch Almond Flax cereal

cottage cheese

Coffee, without a doubt!

Onions. Without onions, my world would be a very bland place.

I am giving up pancakes for Lent.

alchohol, chocolate, crusty bread and cheese. heaven!

oh, and i am soooo not giving those up.

SE Asian cuisine... Vietnamese or Thai.

A slice.

Cheese.

Tomato, fresh with salt and pepper.

Olives.

Wine.

Beer.

Coffee, chocolate, artisanal bread, cheese, and cha siu sou.

Thankfully I don't observe Lent and I would not give up any of these foods...unless there's a health problem that will occur in my life life down the road.

I think eggs might be "it" for me. I love them soft-boiled, hard-boiled, scrambled, over easy, over medium, over hard, sunnyside up, in burritos, sandwiches, ramen noodles, salads, pasta, risotto, on pizza, on toast with butter, in soups, pad thai, fried rice...not to mention baked goods.

carby foods, coffee, most fruits and vegetables

Cheese ravioli, nestle's crunch (omg I know), good bread, nova lox, fried oysters, rare steak, chicken parmigiana. I must be hungry.

Is coffee a food? Need my coffee. Oh, and of course I couldn't live without hamburgers.

Pizza. Can't go a week without it. Not even really three days without it.

@Brian I once went 10 months without pizza during Atkins. It was the hardest thing to do. Giving up carbs was so hard the only thing that eased my pain was a rare steak or chicken salad.

@jbeach - have you ever tried a sunnyside up egg on a hamburger? YUM!!!
