Question of the Day: Not for the squeamish--ever get food sickness?

16 Comments:

Oh, yeah. I think if you're even somewhat adventurous as an eater, it's the price you pay. The worst was from mussels; I was sick for a week. Doctor told me that I probably hadn't eated a bad mussel per se, but one that had ingested poison. (Apparently a common thing for mussels to do--perhaps they're all terribly depressed?) Various minor poisonings from oysters. Stil eat mussels; still eat oysters. And runny eggs and rare burgers. I'd rather one pukefest a year than eating only overcooked, so-called "safe" foods.

My two worst cases were from a ruben sandwich and bad chinese food.... I still eat both.
And I'll agree w/ BaHa, I don't avoid the runny eggs or rare burgers either....

I got really bad food poisoning from either the pizza or salad from Georgio's which I believe is a sister chain of Frankie Johnny & Luigi's Too. The worst part about it, is that it was on New Years Day. My hubby and I spent the entire day throwing up at both ends. I can't look at pizza the same anymore. *sigh*

As a native New Yorker, I thought I would be adventurous, and try the pizza at a local restuarant in Colorado while I was on vacation there. Needless to say, it was like eating Texas Toast with Campbell's condensed tomato-soup on top and could hardly compare to the New York's pizza, if the comparison can even fairly be made. I literally could not stomach it- I spent the whole rest of the night in the bathroom. Some kind of New Yorker karma?

I once went to a friend's house for dinner and got very sick from the tamale pie. I shudder to think of it. I can't imagine ever eating tamale pie again.

I have gotten sick about 60% of the time I have eaten Indian food in New York in the past year. Not from any fancy places, but not from sketchy ones either. I do really like Indian food, and wonder if it just has to do with the super hot stuff (maybe no more vindaloo?) I certainly haven't sworn off Indian food, but I am definitely a little gunshy at this point.

I had bad food poisoning once a few years ago. I had gone to, sigh, Hooters for lunch with coworkers, and then had felt strangely hungry upon returning home, so I cooked a big steak and ate it quickly. In retrospect, this was a terrible mistake, because, well, you know how food sickness works.

It turned out to have been a salad I'd eaten the day before. Half of my coworkers were also sick. But I've never been able to eat at Hooters ever since, about which I am not in the least bit sad.

On reading jbrach's post there with the subject matter at hand in my mind, I read the word "gunshy" not as gun shy but as more of an onomatopoeia, perhaps the sound that your belly makes to warn you that you are about to experience the wonders of releasing half-digested food in two directions at once. For example, "Ugh, I'm feeling a bit gunshy. Oh, oh god, where is the bathroom?"

Never, and I very rarely get sick (it's been a good 5 years at least). I have guts of steel!

Forgot to mention the grossest one. I got a plain cheese calzone from an Original Ray's and was eating it without much attention while watching a Rangers game. I swallowed, and thought, "That tastes disgusting!" I broke it open, and the cheese was covered with mold spots. Needless to say, I missed most ot the rest of the game!

I got quite ill after eating at the Italian restaurant at Epcot. It wiped out two days of my vacation! I was on a behind the scenes technology tour the next day and could barely focus on what was being said, not to mention keep up with the group as they walked. No fun! I went back to my room and my husband went and had fun without me. :-(

A friend of mine recently convinced me to go to White Castle with him. I'd never had it before, which thouroughly surprised him, and after much deliberation I decided to give it a try. Big mistake.Their little burgers didn't seem too awful at first, but soon after we left my stomach was emitting all sorts of foreign noise. Needless to say, I spent a long time in the bathroom that day.

zoyana - White Castles and Krystals are affectionately known as "sliders" in my household!

I got food poisoning from the dorm kitchen my first year at school. The only thing worse than being that sick, is being that sick with 500 other people. Just the sound of a toilet flushing down the hall would set off another wave. It was nearly as bad as the barfarama in the movie 'Stand By Me'.

This wasn't poisoning as such, but I ate tiger shrimp at a place in Florida, near Cape Canaveral, that had been chemically "freshened." I lost all of the skin on the inside of my mouth--tongue, palate, cheeks--and basically lived on milk through a straw for a week. I went to an allergist and tested negative for all seafood problems, but my trustworthy fish guy on Long Island tells me that some dealers and restaurants spray aging shrimp with phosphates--fertilizer--and that he knows of several incidents similar to mine.

Taco bell. Ended up in the hospital after 12 hours of 'both-ends' every 30 minutes (to the minute). Worst experience ever.
