Question of the Day: Ever buy cookware, utensils, or gadgets from an infomercial?

12 Comments:

I have been tempted by the hydroponic kitchen garden that allows you to grow fresh herbs, tomatoes, etc. But I doubt my green thumb even here.

Ha! I've also been tempted by the hydroponic garden, "Fresh tomatoes, year round!" Yeah right! Whenever I hear the phrase, "But wait, there's more," I know I should just change the channel.

I probably should hang my head in shame, but I love, love, love! my pasta pot that drains. It took several late night viewings and recalled painful memories of painful scaldings before I cracked, but there I was, cautiously whispering my credit card number over the phone. When it arrived, I cooked a big pot of steamers and triumphantly poured the simmer broth without losing a mussel. I was hooked. For a week, we ate nothing but boiled foods...[and did I mention, the bonus egg peeler also worked like magic? Who knew?]

As a kid (12 or so?) I insisted that my parents let me buy a V-slicer (a cheap mandoline) from an infomercial. We got it, and it turned out that I was less excited about slicing, dicing, julienning, and making waffle fries than I had previously imagined. That and my Mom was terrified I'd v-slice a finger off.

Anyone have that hydroponic garden? I'm soooooo tempted and at the same time terrified.

the magic bullet! i was so fascinated by those infomercials but never dared by one for myself...lucky for me, my boyfriends family got it for me for the holidays! and i have to admit, it works pretty well for a lot of things (smooth salsas, dips, margaritas, spice rubs)...

I think seriouseats should buy the garden and report back to us readers.....or, you could probably get them to give you one for free with all the great advertising they'd get if it works....I'd buy one.....

I had a ronco dehydrater for years. One christmas I gave them as gifts. I made sun dried tomatos, banana chips, pear chips, apple chips, dried fresh herbs and fruit leather. I loved it. when it was 13 years old it died. I have not replaced it as of yet and last year I used my oven to dry things.
Not sure what I will do. OH MY!
My parents have the showtime grill another ronco product. They love it. They make ribs and roasts in it.
I think everyone I know has had at least one ronco product. Ron Popeil is mr gadget.
Vegamatic owners chime in.

My mother in law wanted a Veg-o-matic for Christmas to replace her old one that had finally broken. Amazingly they are still being made, and I had a great time on the 'As seen on TV' web site looking at all the other offerings. Whenever I get tempted by amazing offer I just remind myself it will be half the price at the discount stores in a few months if I just wait.

I bought a Ginsu knife something like 25 years ago. And I got one free!

I watched this biography of Ron Popeil once (I was sick...forgive me). He is rather an interesting guy.

But I am starting to think that Billy Mays (of orange glo fame) is the next Ron Popeil.

Why, oh why, does Billy Mays have to scream at me? Still, I do love Orange Glow. Other "orangey" products don't work as well.

One time my son washed the windshield of my car with Orange Glow. It was horrible and I had to scrub the entire windshield with Dawn! Twice! The second time with a toothbrush! And replace the wipers! The orange oil made short work of the wipers

But, OMG, did my dash smell good..
