Ithaca, New York: What/Where to Eat?
Hey, Serious Eaters: We're probably crazy and are going to freeze our a**es off, but the gf and I are traveling to Ithaca, New York, for Presidents' Day weekend. Any recommendations? What's the best burger joint there?

Ithaca? No problem!
Burger? Glenwood Pines -- about 5 miles up the west coast of the lake -- check it out here: http://www.glenwoodpines.com/
Pizza - The Nines in Collegetown is not to be missed.
As a burger and pizza guy, you might also want to check out Louie's Lunchtruck on campus.
Stay warm!

Adam, according to an officemate whose son is at the Cornell Hotel School, the best restaurant in town is John Thomas Steakhouse. He says the school's restaurant, Banfi, is decent too.
I'll post his burger recommendation as soon as he remembers it.

My pal's burger suggestion is Max's on S. Cayuga.

Maxie's Supper Club, without a doubt.

@Peter: Thanks for the burger and pizza recs. They're going into the travel journal now. The lunch truck is already there. (The gf's sister recommends it, I think. I suspect this is one of the "hot trucks" that she raves about.)
@Cathy: Thanks, too! Adding John Thomas and Max's as well.

Adam, check out Roadfood.com. Jane and Michael Stern have a fair number of Ithaca-area entries. Ed

definitely glenwood pines! a lovely view of the lake + their burger/fries got me through 8 years of grad school up there.
and i second louie's lunchtruck -- (ask around the cornell campus; just about any undergrad can direct you to where the truck is parked). good, solid, greasy grub. can't be beat.
enjoy the gorges!

Banfi's is the restaurant for the hotel school (it's in the Statler Hotel on campus) and well worth your time. The food is quite good (although not spectacular) but everyone working there is a student in the school, and it's likely that your waiter had something to do with planning the menu. It's really fun to talk to the staff about the food.

Heh. My friend says he meant Maxie's Supper Club too.

So, there's a significant difference between Louie's Lunch and The Hot Truck.
Louie's sits on North Campus pretty much 24/7. Food is good.
The Hot Truck, on the other hand, only appears on West Campus late at night. Hot Truck subs are available from Shortstop Deli pretty much 24/7. Adam, it is critical that you get down there as The Hot Truck is widely credited with inventing French Bread Pizza (before Stouffer's stole the recipe) and they do it really, really well.

I'll bug you about this tomorrow, undoubtedly - but right now, I'm really craving a WGC.

In case you go back in warmer months ... Purity Ice Cream is one of Ithaca's many gems. I once had a root beer float with Ithaca soda and Purity's vanilla ... it's perfect, especially after hiking around the beautiful gorges. Have fun and stay warm!

@DanD: Thanks for the info on the Hot Truck and the connection to French bread pizza. The menu primer was helpful. Now I CAN'T WAIT to visit Ithaca.
@Littlebluesiren: I'm sure we'll go back in warmer months, so I'll put Purity Ice Cream on my list! Thanks.
