Have a favorite street food vendor in NYC? A good story?
Many New Yorkers visit street food vendors on a daily basis. I'm curious about favorites that you may have or good stories of an interaction with a food vendor. Also, do you think food vendors should get more recognition from food critics?

Great question. Street vendors sustained me with delicious, varied eats during my lean years when I just got out of college. I wish there was some map of street vendor destinations. Short of the Vendy Awards (http://urlx.org/streetvendor.org/c6bb7), it's mostly trial and error (though most of my experiences have been pretty favorable). How else can you eat three meals a day for $10? -- not even Rachael Ray can manage that.

there is a fella in brooklyn who makes the rounds of the bars, late night, to bring his delicious empanadas to the fairly drunk and suddenly hungry.
he just pops in with a big ol' bag and sells 'em for a couple of bucks a pop.
they're not good - they're fabulous.
life is good.

I love the spicy chicken over rice with salad from the guys by the entrance to the F train on Houston at Broadway. When you see all the taxis stopping for lunch, you know you're onto a good thing. It's just $5 and is enough for two.

53rd and 6th Ave. Gyro Cart. Although their White Sauce tastes like Ranch Dressing, it is the best Gyro's in the area. I think they open after 7pm. Avoid the decoys one block down.

There's a halal lamb and/or chicken over rice and salad cart outside my office on Maiden Lane and Front Street. No matter the weather, these guys have a line down the block from about 11:30am until well after 2pm. Awesome, tasty, great meat, mixed with finely chopped carrot, broccoli, onion, and green pepper. Served with hot and/or white sauce, rice (several varieties to choose from), salad, and the most amazing falafel ball I've ever tasted all for $4.50. I just love these guys.

I have totally bought empanadas from that guy in brooklyn! They totally hit the spot after a night of drinking. He just wanders in and out of bars with a cooler full of them, if I remember correctly he also carries a bottle of hot sauce.
