The best breakfasts in NY are not at diners. I love the Fairway Cafe for breakfast (great pancakes and eggs). The best breakfast I know of in NY might be at Egg, in Williamsburg. Amazing, eggs, country ham, and biscuits. You also can't go wrong with Barney Greengrass, which could be desribed as a Jewish diner. There are many friendly Greek coffee shops in New York, and they are the closest thing to diners in Gotham.

I agree with Ed that the many (mainly Greek-owned) coffee shops in the City are the closest thing to an "authentic diner experience". I haven't had breakfast at either of the places Ed recommended, but since I live in the West Village (West Greenwich Village) my favorite places for breakfast are: The Village Den (corner of W 12th St & Greenwich Ave), The Bus Stop Cafe (corner of Hudson St & Bethune St) and, for a British breakfast experience, try Tea & Sympathy (Greenwich Ave bet. W12th & W13th Sts).
It's tiny, very cutsiewootsie and a lot of fun, but I think the only day they serve breakfast is Sunday.

I've always enjoyed a place called GOOGIES. Its an Italian diner with huge portions and great breakfast food. Its at 1491 2nd Ave (78th St).

Tool, as a West Villager, how can you overlook the Pink Teacup (Grove, just off Bleecker). Man I miss that place and it's insane bacon.

I'm confused etymologically. How is a greek coffee shop not a diner? It's not shaped like a dining car?
I think when most people think New York diner, they think what the commenters are calling "Greek Coffee Shop." The one is seinfeld is near Columbia, aprox 114th and Broadway. Basic diner food, filled with college kids, but definitely a "diner."
One of the diners on the UWS (City Diner maybe?) makes a good basic breakfast.
I love Sarabeth's (not a diner), if you're on the UWS, but that's the foodie in me talking. When I was growing up, to me, a New York diner was the kind with paper placemats, mints when you leave, and a rotating case of jello. Nothing wrong with that. I hear Tom's in Brooklyn is good, and there's an actual car shaped diner in williamsburg--haven't eaten at either though.

i like the westway too, mostly because i see jackie mason in there from time to time, but if you want a wonderful breakfast, definitely pink teacup.
