Best American Seafood City?

My husband and I live in Detroit. I am starting to plan a vacation for the early spring. I would love to go somewhere with excellent food, nice scenery and close to or on the water. We both love seafood. Any suggestions? Please give lots of details if you desire!

well that depends on the type of seafood. baltimore has fantastic crab. but baltimore itself is... well.. not so much. although it's gotten a lot better over the years.
i'd say go to san francisco. a bit expensive, but you'll have a great time.

I hear that Birmingham, AL is a great place for seafood. A Chef there, Frank Stitt, has opened several restaurants, one of which is Highlands Bar and Grill and he is one of the first stops on the fish purveyors routes into the state from the gulf. Being from a gulf state, I can attest that there is plenty of great seafood to be had from there.

If you weren't going in early spring (when it will still be raining or cloudy), I'd say Seattle for a superb combination of seafood and scenery. May through mid-October only, though.

I think you are going to have plans for more than one vacation with so many great suggestions!

Growing up, I spent my summers in Morehead City, NC catching and eating lots of great seafood from the Bogue Sound. And, you don't have to drive to far from that general area to get some great Eastern Carolina barbecue!

With some restaurants literally flying in the best fresh seafood in the world on a daily basis I would have to say NYC.

But if the question is about the quality of the fish caught in local waters I would have to say Seattle, Vancouver, Boston or anywhere along the Gulf in Mississippi and Louisiana.

Honolulu. Despite the tourist trappings of Waikiki, stay in Waikiki. It's the best place for a first-timer and many of the tourist hotels have got very, very good dishes in their restaurants. You get fresh local seafood, and everything around the Pacific Rim flown in. Alan Wong's, Nico's, Sam Choy's, maybe Hoku's. And there are a ton of very good Japanese restaurants on O'ahu serving all types of seafood. Some of the tourist joints you can easily avoid -- won't name names -- but even a beginning foodie with Internet access can pick and choose and map out more places to eat than you have time for. Mo' bettah stay Hawai'i!

Agree with the Seattle suggestions. Also, don't overlook San Diego. It's a stunning city with great restaurants and a great hotels. Plenty of culture and outdoor sports to keep you busy and who can ask for more perfect weather?

New Orleans of course. We have the best shrimp, crabs and oysters!!! And don't forget the crawfish. Charboiled oysters are the best.

Hey thanks for all the responses. I had the Seattle area in mind for a while. I love the Hawaii idea, but budget constraints might make that for another time. I am going to look into it more...I may be back for more suggestions!
