Yerba Matte: Great beverage or the greatest beverage ever?
All of a sudden, all of the coffee shops in my neighborhood are serving the delicious South American beverage, Yerba Matte. It's sweet, delicious, and packs a punch like coffee no longer does for me. Anyone have a preferred brand for making this treat at home? Is Peet's better than Tully's? Or do I need to import my Mate directly from the rainforest for the full experience?

I'm not sure that what you had is the traditional mate, you're talking about mate latte, which I will agree is very delicious.

I brew it at home using the Guayaki brand (discover the power within!) and absolutely love it. If you're not a big green tea fan, or tea fan in general, you may not like Mate, as it has a strong, deep earthy flavor, similar but not exactly like green tea. I have no idea how authentic what I'm drinking really is (no, I'm not sipping it from a gourd on a horse in Argentina) but I enjoy it, and drink a cup every day.

I haven't tried it, but Pixie Mate seems to be a popular brand (I've seen it at Whole Foods) and worth a try.

ohtorvald - that is the brand they use at Tully's, which is what I have been drinking. Tasty stuff.

In Buenos Aires, where I first got a taste of Mate (in homes and restaurants) the Mate divide was between sweetened or unsweetened (I oscillate between the two). I bought great Mate in Paraguay, Uruguay and in Argentina but do not know which of the brands sold in this country is the best. I looked at Pixie Mate and while I intensely dislike the New Age-style descriptions, I might try it when I am next at a Whole Foods.
