Question of the Day: Who Does the Cooking in Your Household?

You? Your spouse? Your housemates?

13 Comments:

My wife and I both enjoy cooking, so we split the duties evenly. On most nights, we eat different meals. But a couple times each week, one of us will prepare something. When we host dinner parties -- which we frequentl do -- we split the responsibilities. She does far more of the planning for these events, but that's not my choice. It's hers. She's a little bit of a control freak when it comes to entertaining. :)

My boyfriend and I both cook, and often we cook together. Our styles are completely different, though, so when we have people over it is usually one or the other of us who conceives the meal and does the bulk of the work. I was raised almost exclusively vegetarian, and he was raised in a fishing village in Northern Norway, so we've taught one another a lot about how to cook with different ingredients. Before I met him I'd never cooked with fish, and before he met me he'd never heard of quinoa or tempeh!

I'm the cook in the house. Having just purchased a home with a serious kitchen upgrade, I'm a very excited cook.

I plan the meals, then my girlfriend and I take turns cooking for each other - sometimes it's a collaboration.

I usually do--then I get out of most of the cleaning up.

My relationship is a match made in heaven. I LOVE to plan, shop for, and produce all of the big messes in the kitchen. Ed actually gets excited to clean it all up. He feels that there is something exciting about turning a large sticky pile of dirty dishes into a sparkling stack of clean ones. I personally think he needs therapy, but I wouldn't have the arrangement any other way.

I'm a freelancer who works at home, so I generally do the weeknight planning, shopping, and cooking. Once I start chopping that garlic, all the aggravations of the day evaporate. On the weekend, Bruce often takes over--makes great soup, particularly. If I'm working on a huge project, Clinton Street Frankie's steps in!
I generally do most of the dishes, simply because it is easier than redoing them...Acme, can I borrow Ed?

i do all the cooking, my boyfriend all the cleaning. unless i've cut my finger chopping something, then he is nice enough to take over... he also comes in handy when it is time for mashing potatoes or stirring things!

Sorry BaHa -- I'm adept at making big messes so I need to reserve Ed's strength for our kitchen.

Right now I'm handling 95% of the cooking, but that's only because my wife is dealing with a squirmy one-month-old. Prior to that we split the duties pretty evenly. I love to cook, but I have a penchant for more high-fat fare than my wife, who cooks wonderful vegetarian Indian food. As my waistline expands I realize that I miss the regular doses of veg in my diet.

I am the one who likes to cook in my family. Because so, I usually have to clean up too, that way I have a good chance of finding the cleaned utensil again. My husband refers to the kitchen as 'that yellow room', because he can't manage to make anything other than ramen or frozen pizza (unless it involves a grill).

While we both like to cook, my husband does most of the cooking. Which I am OK with because he is a better cook than me :)

Mostly me, as my boyfriend works longer hours than I do and has a longer commute. He would much rather do the cooking though--I'm not much of a cook (pasta with things thrown in it, some fish, I'm kind of boring), but I love having the house to myself in the early evening to bake. Dessert is a much bigger event most evenings.
