Question of the Day: How Do You Like Your Fries?

McD's thin, steak-fry thick, crinkle-cut? Waffled or shoestring? Skin on or off? What's your take on the perfect french fry?

As always, if you have a topic you'd like to see featured, by all means, suggest a question!

I definitely lean towards pomme frites, the slender, double-fried sort, slathered with some mayo mixed with hot sauce. They go great with burgers or a nice, rare steak. But on cold days there's nothing like a paper cup filled with thick, crunchy steak fries sprinkled with malt vinegar and some kosher salt.

I can't resist this question. I like 'em FRENCH fried - you know, fried once at medium, cooled and re-fried at a higher temperature.

If I have to eat them "out", I guess I like McD - if they are right out of the fryer. But there's no rosemary mayo at McD.

Mickey D's thin with lots of mayonnaise.

I love those big thick steak fries, cooked well but not quite crispy. And of course a bit of skin still on. Mmmm. Is it lunch time yet??

ahhh so many kinds, so many i love! belgian, sweet potato with or without brown sugar, shoestring, but always want them to be crispy - no soggy please!

Rare makes a nice fry basket which includes sweet potato, waffle and shoestring and 3 dipping sauces. perfect to satisfy the most discerning fry person.

pomme frites style. I need some potato in my fries, so I don't like shoestring, and I hate the potato sticks masquerading as fries at some NYC restaurants.

pomme frites of course--crispy-on-the-outside-creamy-on-the-inside and pipping hot. drenched in vinegar. i've also been known to throw handfuls of fries into my wendy's chili (egads, what class), a nice combo if you're faced with fast food french fries. also excellent: sweet potato fries, savory or sweet.

I love fries pomme frites style with tartar sauce or garlic mayo. Sometimes I love Wendi's fries but only if they are a bit greasy and soggy....strange but true!

me, too, for crispy, creamy, hot!

Pomme frites are indeed fabulous. I really love crispy "chips" under a beer-batter dipped piece of fried cod, sprinkled with malt vinegar and a squeeze of lemon. I could dip those in tartar sauce forever. If I have to go fast food, McD's of course. Does anybody like chili-cheese fries too? Or is that just my obsession!

I was never a huge fan of chili-cheese fries, but I did frequent a diner that served fries slathered with gravy and I found it to be an excellent hangover cure!

EJ - that's how we Texans like fries with our chicken fried steak - slathered in cream gravy, with fried okra on the side. Much to my embarrassment.

I live in Queens and there is a famous deli here called Cherry Valley that's open 24/7. They serve fries "couch" style; covered in gravy and mozzarella cheese. It may not look appetizing but I can't go a week without stopping by there at least once and ordering their waffle couch fries.

I secretly love McDonalds fries! However, I consider fried potatoes in most any form to be pure heaven. Oh yeah, I love em cooked in duck fat too!

Well, my favorite way I guess is as poutine, the Canadian way with cheese curds and beef gravy.

Failing that, I'm not particular. Any kind of fry is good by me!

It's my secret shame -- I love the fries at Nathan's! I consider it an emblem of my native New Yorker-ness, if indeed a shameful secret can be considered an emblem. Maybe it's the little fork they come with.

For me it's crinkle cut, cooked to a crispy, golden brown on the outside and soft and fluffy inside. I like them best with a smoky-sweet barbecue sauce, but catsup is good, too. Sometimes I just like them salty. Crispy dinner-style fries are my second choice. And fergawdsakes, keep your raw garlic, olive oil and Italian parsley to yourself! That's the last thing I want on my fries!

Chunky chips with mayonnaise. I like them to come in a paper cone that handily absorbs some of the grease, and be eaten with a tiny plastic fork. The fork provides the illusion of restraint. The kind of mayonnaise that is called 'fritessaus' in Dutch is best - it's a rather plasticky concoction, slightly sweeter than most prepared mayonnaises, and it's just perfect with fried potatoes.

1. Mickey D's, Mickey D's. I could care less about how good the cheeseburger is, or whether or not there is beef tallow or trans fats. YUM.

2. Cheese gravy fries at Tom's Restaurant on Broadway in NYC. Yes, cheese gravy fries. After the initial wary bite, it's all good.
