Do I need to wash the apple I got from the farmer's market?
It almost feels like a act of disrespect, and sometimes you honestly just want to crunch into those things right as you're strolling home from the market. But you can never be too careful these days...

yes, you need to wash it. Why is it an act of disrespect? I am confused--it's not like it is coated in special organic voo-doo pixie dust. Just regular dust dirt and other crap.

I would at least give it a rub with a (clean) handkerchief or something. Who knows how it was handled during harvest and transport to the farmstand. And that's before all the other potential buyers before you have handled it. (Someone should make a Purell for this purpose.)

Also, particularly if your farmers market is located in a busy area, it will have been exposed to car exhaust and other airborn toxins. It's best just to limit your consumption of those things by giving it a rinse.

I'm a manager at a farmers' market. Trust me you insult no one by washing the fruits and vegetables. Even if the farmer washed the apple before he or she brought it to the market, you have no idea how many people picked it up and put it back down. Why increase your risk of getting the flu or a cold? Always wash your fruits and vegetables.

I just rub it on my jeans. Gotta eat a peck of dirt before you die, Grandma said.

You have no idea how people have touched that apple...
