where to find good cassoulet in manhattan?

very difficult to find a (French) restaurant that serves a good (& proper) Cassoulet! any suggestions, s'il vous plaît?

18 Comments:

i like the one at zucco's on orchard street....tiny place though.

Balthazar's plat du jour on Sundays is cassoulet. I haven't had it, but the co-chefs there Lee Hanson and Riad Nasr both trained at Daniel, so they should know their way around cassoulet.

On my first date with Craig, my boyfriend, I had cassoulet at Lucien in the East Village. I recommend it highly, but I don't recommend having cassoulet on a first date. All those beans do not romance make.

appreciate the comments:
a) won't go to zucco, had a bad experience & will NOT support his
obnoxiousness. have written several reviews of this place via nytimes,
nymag, etc - a very bad guy! who is incredibly customer-UNfriendly. i
hope more people would NOT go & support a jerk like this, but i
realistically know it probably won't affect.....
b) thx ed; assume the co-chef's are rarely there(??); as well as EVERY
time i go, it is still mobbed!!!! maybe when Keith's new Italian rest.
opens, the crowds will gravitate to the village(???)
c) Lucien is claustrophobic, as well as being a little too faux French; cute,
but decidedly very very American.

BY NO MEANS should the above comments be construed as being unappreciative OR critical of the authors, only my experiences at the above-mentioned restaurants.

any others????

My husband, the cassoulet addict, thinks the version at Gascogne is excellent. That's as it should be, I think, since the restaurant features the cuisine of that eponymous region in France where cassoulet is a major dish.

damn, RGR - i walked past just LAST nite!! if i had known, thx to u, i would have tried - thx

additionally, have "heard", but not had, the cassoulet at Cosette on e33rd (nr 3rd av) & at Capsouto Frères in TriBeCa

What's cassoulet?

that's why "google" is so successful - try it, then reformulate your question!!!!

But it's easier to type it here.

Cassoulet is a classic, wintertime, dirty-knuckles, French dish, typically served in an oval-shaped dish that's been baked with beans, duck confit, sausages and some old calf shoe leather for body. (I keed, I keed) Really, it's a great dish during cool weather, and if Gasgogne is still slinging these days, I recommend theirs. Bring an appetite!

I have had the Cassoulet at Les Halles and thought it was spectacular. The duck confit and pork belly are outstanding. I am getting hungry just thinking about it.

EatWI: have u tried the cassoulet at Cosette (very nr to Les Halles)? or, as per above - Gascogne or, Lucien or Balthazar? --- for comparative purposes

My husband had the cassoulet at Cosette. It was not a classic version, i.e., a casserole; instead, it was more of a soup with cassoulet ingredients.

At LCB Brasserie (fka La Cote Basque), chef/owner Jean-Jacques Rachou has been turning out French classics for years. Of course, my husband did not pass up the opportunity to have the cassoulet there and said it did not disappoint.

merci beaucoup RGR - "sounds like" your husband should be contributing since he is the cassoulet "expert"/taster - just kidding, thx for your suggestions, look forward to visiting your above-named places!!!

@Sandro: Thanks! That was so much better than Google.

Baruch - I have only been to Manhattan three times so I haven't had a chance to check out Cosette, Lucien, Balthazar, or Gascigne but I appreciate the suggestions and will keep them in mind next time I visit. I especially would like to try Balthazar. I was impressed with Les Helles version but I am comparing that to the cassoulet that I can get here in the Midwest (Wisconsin/Illinois), none of which even comes close to the stuff offered at Les Halles. Pork Belly??? I don't think there is a place in Wisconsin that even serves it (if there is someone should let me know), so you can see where I am coming from.

i second the vote for zucco's 'le french diner'
