What's going on with burgers in the city?

In my neighborhood of the Village, there are so many high end burger joints opening and in the process of opening. On 6th Ave. near 12th street the guys who own BLT Prime seemed to have opened a burger joint and

Well I'd say Manhattan is doing very well, or too well, vis-a-vis burgers. It won't be long before there's a Trump Burger outlet.

But my neighborhood, Park Slope. is a veritable burger Siberia. With the possible exception of Bonnie's Grill and maybe, on good days, Stone Park and/or Applewood, it's the ole "F" train for me to get my fix.

Danny - please put a shack near Prospect Park! Pleaaase!

So in a total coincidence (for those of you who believe in such things), I went to Melon's for dinner last night and posted on my blog (http://1morebite.blogspot.com/) about my loyalty to the one true burger, but I did share my willingness to live in peaceful harmony with others' misguided belief systems.

Having been curious for a while now about Island Burgers and Shakes in NYC, I ask you, do they sport a worthy burger?

@megc: I went to Island Burgers and Shakes about a year ago and liked it, but wasn't super impressed. They focus more on interesting toppings than quality meat. So if you like your burger dressed with avocado or sour cream, give it a shot. If you're a purist (like me), you can probably skip it.

Livetotravel: Do you know "Donuts Coffee Shop" on Fifth Ave? It's only open till like 4 p.m. or so. The place is stuffed to the gills with never-been-remodeled charm. It's been my dream to somehow get a hold of that space from 6 p.m. on, grab fellow Park Sloper George Motz, and make some kick-ass burgers on the well-seasoned griddle there.

Also, Livetotravel: Have you tried Coquette on Fifth Ave. and, oh, 2nd Street or so? Not a bad burger there. It's dressed a little too schmancy for me (blue cheese, or some such, from what I recall), but not a bad burger. Bonnie's is right around the corner from me, and I go there a lot, but I've found only one of the guys really burgers right -- the rest tend to overcook them.
