What do you like best about your favorite food store?

Is it the free samples? The fancy foods? The friendly service?

Free samples don't really do it for me overall, though I think they're a nice touch. I think when they're done right, they can help a store -- as long as it's clear that the product (whatever it is) hasn't been sitting there all day, getting cold or warm, attracting flies, etc.

I like variety and hard-to-get items. I walk an extra 7 or 8 blocks to the Key Food near my house because it has a great specialty food selection and the staff is very responsive to ordering in items for customers. Even if I'm doing non-specialty shopping, I'll walk past the two other supermarkets and visit this Key Food.

I can't say too much about friendly service. I grew up in the land of friendly service (the Midwest) and then moved to New York, the land of gruff service. I've just come to expect a certain amount of 'tude at the till now. I do, however, think that friendly service is a must in the deli section or any of the departments where people have to order things custom.

Also: Short lines!

Just about everything! Clean, pretty, AWSOME produce, Wine selection, Coffee shop, Gourmet foods, seafood, visible butcher, sushi station, Great friendly service. I have a grocery store that is less than 2 mins from my house but I drive 20 mins to get to this one because I know that they will always have everything I need. It is a little pricey so I try not to do big shopping trips for staple foods there though I wish I could. But I always go there to buy my produce and end up with a cart full of other things.

My standards are low! If it's clean and they have stuff in stock, I'm pretty happy. That and a decent selection of produce that's not all old and wilted.

WEGMAN'S! OMG EVERYTHING! Ask anyone who has ever been there.

NYC supermarkets, IMO, suck. I usually have to hit Gristedes, D'Ag and Food Emporium to get the basic regular items I like to have on hand. There's a wonderful little place on the UWS (91 & Broadway) that I always get to when I'm in that area. It's tiny and chock full of almost any exotic ingredient you can imagine. Great pricing too.
