Question of the Day: What Were Your Top 3 Restaurants of 2006?
Now that the remains of our Burning Bûche de Noël are in the ashcan, it's time for some year-end reflection.
What were your top 3 restaurants of 2006? Doesn't matter if they're high-end or low or whether they're new this year or old standbys. Also feel free to count "one-offs" tooyou know, like if you only visited a place while on vacation or some such.

Michael Mina (SF), Medicine EatStation (SF), and Chez Panisse (Berkeley) were my top three for the year, I guess. This is really tough, 5 best would be nicer. :)

It's hard to get attention when Manhattan looms over your shoulders, so here's to the incredible restaurant scene in Brooklyn ...
1. Saul - Boerum Hill - where on earth can you get a $30 prix fixe dinner at any other Michelin 1 star? Le Bernardin's loss has been Brooklyn's gain these last 7 years. Cheers to Saul Bolton!
2. Applewood - Park Slope - David Shea would have many stars if he were cooking in Manhattan - and he stays true to his slow food philosophy and supports local area farmers to boot. Happy 2nd Anniversary!
3. The Good Fork - Redhook - Great new place serving up interesting dishes under the guiding hand of Sohui Kim - here's to your longevity!

Ray's the Steaks -- Arlington, VA. Best steak ever, casual atmosphere -- can't beat it.

1. The Federal - Agawam, MA. It would be at home in Boston or NYC, but is truly outstanding here in western Massachusetts. Thanksgiving dinner there was eye-opening. I'll be going back at my first opportunity.
2. La Super Rica - Santa Barbara, CA. Best Mexican food I've ever had. That bowl of melted cheese and bacon (paired with fresh tortillas and some guacamole) indelibly inserted itself into my memory in the OMFG category.
3. Li's - Longmeadow, MA. Best sushi I've had, anywhere.

1. Restaurant Didier de Courten, Sierre, Switzerland. De Courten's inventive yet thoroughly grounded cuisine based on the best ingredients is a symphony of aromas and tastes.
2. Osteria Veglio, Annunziata (La Morra), Italy. Superb renditions of traditional Langhe dishes served in a splendid setting. The panna cotta has no equal (thanks Garrett Oliver for taking me there several times!).
3. Restaurant Seinpost, Scheveningen, The Netherlands. Gert-Jan Cieremans magisterially prepares the bounty of the North Sea - and all meats and vegetables equally well. The view over the famous beach is wonderful.

3. Rioja in Denver - best pasta, hands down.
