How long can smoked salmon safely be stored in its original pkg?

I have had packages of smoked salmon in their original packages for some time (many years). Since there is no "expiration date" anywhere to be found on the foil or the wood box in which they arrived, I have always thought they were good "forever." Since I don't know that to be true, I haven't opened them. Are they safe to open and eat?

depends on your definition of 'safe'.....if you've had these for years, it's time to toss them...typically, smoked salmon (especially cold smoked) is good for a few weeks in the vaccum sealed plastic, a few months if you freeze it, and once it's opened you've got a few days....

Two to three weeks, unopened, in the refrigerator. Up to three months, unopened, in the freezer (but be prepared for some loss of quality). Three or four days once opened.

If this shelf stable hot smoked salmon (the wood box and foil lead me to believe it is), then it will keep as long as canned salmon... a long time. Perhaps years (although the flavor won't be so great, but then the shelf stable stuff isn't all that much better than smoke flavored canned salmon in my opinion).

If it's hot smoked, but perishable (must be refrigerated) salmon, then I wouldn't keep it longer than a few months.

If it's cold smoked, refrigerated salmon, then a few weeks.

Once any are opened, a few days.

Months...remember that smokng is foremost a means of preservation, not of flavoring.
