Just wanted some input ...is it at Saigon bakery on Mott? or does someone else have a nice hidden gem?

KBear: A good resource for banh mi reports in NYC is The Porkchop Express. Check the right-hand sidebar, and you'll see a subsection of all his banh mi posts. Bonus is that PCE is a pretty good read, too.

There's a place on 2nd St at Avenue A called "Nicky's Vietnamese" or something. I've never been but I heard it's good.
Oh yes, here's PCE's write-up about Nicky's.

Nicky's is really good. There's also a really good banh mi place on Mott Street south of Canal on the east side of the street.

Nicky's meat is weird...kind of gristly somehow. I wish places would put more pate on the bahn mi's. There was a fancy bahn mi place in Grand Central that closed a number of years ago, which I kind of liked.

NYminknit: That place was called ... something that started with an N. I don't remember. But I liked that place's banh mis, too. The Nicky's meat -- I don't know. I had Nicky's only once during this weird period where I didn't like the taste of pork. ... I think I'm all better now.

I really like Nicky's but I admit it's also very near where I live and thus hella convenient. I admit I haven't tried as many Banh Mi shops as I'd like, but I feel like I've already found one of the best places in NYC not two blocks away.
There IS a new place coming on Mott St (the sign is up and fixtures are in the store, but not yet open) that I'm really excited about, if only because it's actually pretty big and I'm curious to see what they'll have to accompany their Banh Mi. Last time I went to Nicky's they didn't even have their normal assortment of Asian potato chips, which was a bit of a letdown as they are the perfect complement to a classic (pate) banh mi. Has anyone ever tried the Nicky's "summer/spring" rolls? They are in a pastry case on the counter-- rice paper wrapped something or other. I'm always interested, but they just look like they've been sitting around forever.
