Drinks Greg Harned 2 comments

The bar at Wildwood in NW Portland boasts 53 spirits from 22 different local producers. Bar manager Ryan Csanky is among them—his recently released Aria gin makes an appearance in a few of the cocktails at Wildwood. We asked Csanky to recommend a few drinks to order the next time we stop by the bar. More

Sam's Pizza Palace, Wildwood, New Jersey

At Sam's Pizza Palace in Wildwood, New Jersey, you always get a slice hot from the oven because the place is always packed and slice-pie turnover is fierce. And I can't recall a time I ever stopped at a single slice. More

Mack's Pizza in Wildwood: The 'Bad Girl' of Jersey Shore Pizzerias

Slice Adam Kuban 19 comments

I fell for Mack's Pizza not for the flavor (even though it's excellent) but for the style and the attitude. It's the bad girl of Jersey Shore pizzerias—Rizzo decked out in her shades, tight black dress, and pink jacket. More

Daily Slice: Manco & Manco, Ocean City, New Jersey

Slice Adam Kuban 14 comments

Visitors returning to the Jersey Shore this summer may get a bit of a what the wha? when grabbing a slice at Mack & Manco's: All three locations on the Ocean City boardwalk (as well as Mack & Manco's Too in Somers Point) have changed their name to Manco & Manco. More

A Sandwich a Day: Porchetta and Fennel Sauerkraut at Wildwood in Portland, OR

A Sandwich a Day Adam Lindsley 3 comments

There's no shortage of great sandwiches in Portland, and the fennel-marinated porchetta and fennel sauerkraut from Wildwood is one of our favorites. Chef Dustin Clark marinates the pork for 12 hours in olive oil, fennel seed, fennel frond, caramelized fennel, garlic, chile flake, salt, and pepper, before a 12-hour slow roast makes it fall-apart tender. The Tornado Potato Touches Down in the U.S.

Remember the tornado potato? That strange spiral-cut potato that's skewered and deep-fried? The street-food treat found in Seoul, South Korea? It did a whirlwind tour of the web in 2007, when the blog Superlocal posted a photo of it. (And, yes, we blogged it, too.) It looks like the tornado potato has finally made it Stateside. It'll be available at the Minnesota State Fair this year (August 27 through Labor Day), but I caught sight of one this week on the boardwalk in Wildwood, New Jersey, which is basically all state-fair food all the time (at least during the summer tourist season). [What it looks like, after the jump ...]... More

Wildwood Eats: Britton's Bakery

Adam Kuban 2 comments

I hate sweet breakfasts, yet when I visit the Wildwoods in New Jersey, I feel compelled to eat an apple fritter from Britton's Gourmet Bakery each morning for that all-important first meal of the day. The apple fritter here is pretty near perfect, with a crisp exterior and a moist but not gooey interior studded with bits of tender apple. And they have just the right amount of icing—enough for added sweetness but not so much that your fingers stick together. Be sure to get there early, though. Not even three generations of family on duty at any given time can keep the fritters in stock much past noon. Don't take my word for it? Ronald Reagan himself wrote... More

MACK'S PIZZA Location: 3218 Boardwalk (b/n E. Pine and E. Wildwood avenues; map) Phone: 609-522-6166 Location: 4200 Boardwalk (b/n E. Roberts and E. Baker avenues; map) Phone: 609-729-0244 The Skinny: Two locations on boardwalk. Part of the Mack's vs. Sam's Wildwood pizza rivalry. Described as "greasy" by many people we talked to, due in part to the use of cheddar in the cheese blend. SAM'S PIZZA Location: 2600 Boardwalk (b/n E. 26th and E. Juniper avenues; map) Phone: 609-522-6017 The Skinny: On the Wildwood boardwalk. One half of the Mack's vs. Sam's Wildwood pizza rivalry. Sam's is Slice's preference. A... More

HOW YOU DOIN'?: Mack's Pizza, in what appeared to be the original location (top left); well, at least it looked older than the version of Mack's farther south on the boardwalk. 92¢ a slice! (top right) Beat that, NYC! "You lookin' at me?" This pizzaiolo (above) at Mack's used a novel pizza-sauce pump to apply the red stuff to his pies, after first layering on the cheese. For Memorial Day weekend, the editor and publisher of this site—that would be me—went "down the shore" to the Wildwoods in New Jersey. Memorial Day, of course, is when we give props... More
