Smoked Salmon Crème Fraîche Tart With a Cornmeal Millet Crust From 'Whole-Grain Mornings'

Cook the Book Kate Williams 1 comment

Most of use know that salmon, cream cheese, and capers is a killer combination layered atop a bagel. But those flavors aren't necessarily tied to a bagel shop. Filling a buttery cornmeal and millet tart crust with a tangy crème fraîche custard, slices of salmon, flecks of dill, and a handful of salty capers, as Megan Gordon does in Whole-Grain Mornings, is just as grand an idea. Saucy Tomato Poached Eggs with Kale and Wheat Berries From 'Whole-Grain Mornings'

Megan Gordon's take on shakshuka in her new cookbook, Whole-Grain Mornings, isn't particularly traditional. There are some Anaheim chiles in there for heat, sure, and the gently poached eggs and tomato sauce meld together into a wonderfully comforting rich stew. Yet Gordon bulks up the dish with chewy wheat berries and chopped kale for color and texture. More

Honeyed Tangerine and Lemon Marmalade From 'Whole-Grain Mornings'

Marmalade might not contain any whole grains, but it certainly makes a great accompaniment to many of the grain-based recipes in Megan Gordon's new cookbook, Whole-Grain Mornings. Spread over buttered toast, drizzled on buckwheat pancakes, or stirred into a bowl of oatmeal, this bright citrusy preserve is a perfect antidote to winter. More

Apricot Pistachio Granola From 'Whole-Grain Mornings'

Granola was the object of my first breakfast obsession (since then, it has been a rotating cast of oatmeal, toast, and muesli). My mom would make giant batches of honey, almond, and sesame granola every few months, pulling out the giant roasting pan and spending hours near the stove, stirring, as the cereal transformed from dry oats to a sweet, toasty treat. Megan Gordon's apricot pistachio granola from her new cookbook, Whole-Grain Mornings, is a version of one of her company's best-sellers. More

Blueberry Breakfast Bars From 'Whole-Grain Mornings'

Sweet, snack-like foods are not usually my pick for breakfast. I'm less likely to grab a muffin or slice of coffee cake than I am to slurp down a bowl of oatmeal. Still, slightly sweet baked goods like Megan Gordon's blueberry breakfast bars in her new cookbook, Whole-Grain Mornings, could find a place in my breakfast routine if I need a quick grab-and-go meal. Cook the Book: 'Whole-Grain Mornings' by Megan Gordon

I'm the kind of person who eats the exact same thing for breakfast every morning. I'll go through long phases (very long phases) where I'll only want to eat oatmeal, muesli, granola, or toast—always with yogurt and often with fruit. Right now, I'm in the midst of a 2+ year infatuation with muesli. But while I am clearly a creature of habit, I am not entirely opposed to trying new things when it comes to my a.m. habits. This is why I was delighted to open up my copy of Megan Gordon's new cookbook, Whole-Grain Mornings. More
