Now, this in no way takes away from my love of cereal, but
I have a wild, uncontrollable love for waffles, too. I'd happily eat them plain, or even frozen. Look, I'm also a big fan of made-from-scratch-and-an-iron waffles, but that's another story for another time.

Miura Waffle Milk Bar in Vancouver is doing some very interesting things to waffles. The shop sells a variety of savory and sweet waffle "sandos" derived from "
sandoitchi," a Japanese word for sandwich. The
Garlic Chicken Waffle Sando is stuffed with juicy garlic-spiked chicken, red miso, cabbage slaw, and a drizzle of mayo. But the meat isn't sandwiched between the two waffles as you might expect; it's cooked directly
into the batter.

The folks at the
IHOP recently added Chicken and Waffles to their menu—a classic that's pretty hard not to like. Except the plate you get is not exactly fried chicken and waffles—it's chicken fingers.

Hey, guess what?
It's National Waffle Day! The "holiday" marks the anniversary of the first U.S. patent for a waffle iron, which
Cornelius Swarthout received on August 24, 1869. How good a name is
Cornelius Swarthout?
And how bad do you want a waffle right now? (You do, you really do.) Whether it's the thick and crisp Belgian kind, the denser and chewier Liège, the syrup-filled
stroopwafels, or the frozen ones from a box (no shame), be sure to honor the waffle today.

This
Mini Donut Factory is tragically out of stock on
ThinkGeek (what a tease!) but we can watch it in action here, and hope someone in a factory somewhere is producing more pronto. The waffle iron-resembling gadget pops out six donuts in less than four minutes. But a very important question, are these
really donuts if they're not deep-fried? Aren't they just donut-shaped waffles? Watch the video and decide.

[Photograph: Waffleizer] In case the name Waffleizer isn't self-explanatory, the site's FAQ states: "Waffleizer's goal is to answer the question 'Will it waffle?'—thereby expanding the frontiers of waffling." The man behind the waffle, Dan, only started the blog a last week, but he's already done bread pudding, burgers, and hash browns. Judging from Dan's tweet earlier today, much more waffleizing is coming soon. [Photograph: Robyn Lee] Lisa Yockelson toys with many waffle recipes in this Washington Post piece before finding "the best"—and it involves fifteen ingredients. A few notches beyond Bisquick, this recipe calls for: all-purpose flour, whole-wheat pastry flour, oat flour, spelt flour, cornmeal, and flaxseed meal, among other ingredients. At last, the expression of the flours and meals, balanced by enough liquid and the protein-fat content of the whole eggs, raised with the right type and level of leavening agents (here, a mixture of baking powder and baking soda), and turned into a batter with a few swift strokes, is ready to be griddled between the grids of a hot waffle iron. The fairly deep, Belgian-style irons are the best,...
