Some Notable Food Destinations with Labels on Google Maps

This is really cool. Serious eater maportofu started a Talk thread and points out that there's a handful of New York City food and drink destinations with labels on Google maps: "I find it funny that it actually has labels for Magnolia Bakery and The Bitter End. I also see a label for Lombardi's, Fraunces Tavern. Mysteriously, none for Shake Shack." My guess is that Magnolia gets one because it's a huge tourist trap for Sex and the City hauteheads while the rest get them for sheer historical value. I poked around to see if other historic or notable NYC food destinations appeared but no dice—no Katz's, no Old Town Bar, no Sylvia's, no Peter Luger, no Di Fara....

Ordering at Your Table Via Your Table

Photographs from Phillie Casablanca on Flickr I’ve been a waitress on and off for the last eight years of my life. Waiting tables has taught me a lot, especially about how to deal with people. I learned very quickly how to read my tables and give them the kind of service they were looking for: super friendly and bubbly, quiet and removed, a bit mocking, or something in between. It's a difficult job, and that's why it's so hard for me to imagine a computer doing it. The Chicago Tribune reports on Inamo, a restaurant in central London which has replaced its wait staff with a computer system where diners "can order from an illustrated menu, pay their bill, summon...

#foodblogger Hashtag Helps You Find Food Bloggers on Twitter

Yesterday I suggested that food bloggers using Twitter tweet the message #foodblogger, essentially tagging themselves and thereby creating a directory of food bloggers within Twitter Search. (More on Twitter "hashtags" here.)...

Scan Toaster 'Prints' onto Bread

Sometimes two slices of toast on a plate can look pretty dull and unappetizing, but imagine if you could jazz up this boring breakfast staple with a cool picture or a sweet note to your significant other—that would be pretty neat, right? The Scan Toaster makes that possible. The toaster, by designer Sung Bae Chang, uses hot wires that rotate within a 30 degree radius to burn the image or text of your choice onto your toast. Since this thing can print literally anything, the possibilities are endless. The toaster is still in the design phase (it was a finalist in the 2008 Electrolux Design Lab competition), but if it ever makes it to a store near me, I'm...

CrazyPC 5.25-Inch Bay Toaster

We're all familiar with gamers who never leave their computer stations. However, is this new hard drive toaster taking it a bit too far for those gamers who "crave toast"? The toaster fits in a standard 5.25 inch bay on your PC tower, and includes software for adjusting temperature as well as a "crumb tray for easy cleanup". Last I checked, gamers don't eat dry toast. This means you'll still need to trek over to the fridge for some butter or jam. Lucky for you, Mac users, your version is on the way. No word on if you'll be able to attach to your laptop. Oh, and don't forget--bread not included. [via The Presurfer]...
