So, Vegetarian Marshmallows. Can they be done well?
I told a friend that I would make anything for her birthday that she wanted. She chose vegetarian marshmallows. Not being a vegetarian, I had no idea how to approach this, and so far an internet search has revealed that 1) Agar-agar is a great alternative to animal-based gelatine. 2) No, it totally isn't, especially in marshmallows. 3) But there's this stuff called Emes Kosher Gel that totally works! 4) Except it was revealed that their gelatine had animal products in it, and a bunch of vegan candymakers almost went out of business. Back at square one.
I'm lost. Any ideas?
Potluck theme: "Culinary Intoxication"
I'm going to a potluck next Friday with the theme "Culinary Intoxication" (give us a break--we're college students!). The food doesn't have to be literally "intoxicating" per se, but it needs to include alcohol in part of the cooking process. I almost always bring dessert to potlucks, so I'd like to switch it up and bring a savory dish. Any good suggestions for (preferably vegetarian) potluck-appropriate dishes with alcohol? Thanks!!
Need a fancy vegetarian friendly date spot in Austin
Hi,
I am looking to take the gal I have been dating out for a special night. I am a vegetarian so looking for places that do that well, but I do eat fish.
Doesn't have to be super fancy, but def should be romantic/cozy/fun. Any thoughts on Wink, Jefferies, Driskoll, 4 seasons?
Or could be way more laid back then that.
I don't want to head out to Fredericksburg because we are both swamped with work right now, that is something I would consider in the future.
BTW I am in North central, so would be nice if the places were downtown or north.
Mexican Pizza!
Does anybody have a good recipe? Vegetarian, please...
NYC Lower East Side recommendations, please!
Hi, NYC food-savvy people!
We are a group of 15, needing to make a reservation in the LES. We were originally going to Café Mogador, but they can only accommodate a group of 12. Looking for something cheap, as we are mainly writerly, new entrepreneurial types -- and also with vegetarian options (one gal is also gluten/wheat-free, egg-free, and nut-free, in addition to being a vegetarian, but I won't ask you to go there...)
Introducing NYC to my boyfriend...
I am headed to NYC next next weekend and have already begun my mental checklist of eats. I am a relatively easy-going vegetarian (I eat fish). Boyfriend, however, is allergic to raw fruits and vegetables, dislikes fish, and is generally a picky eater. (The boy doesn't even like chocolate that much.) If I could take him to a good burrito place, he'd be thrilled. Let me know where I could venture, in Manhattan or Brooklyn.
Vegetarian without Soy?
Today is a new start for me on vegetarian eating. Can I be a vegetarian without eating soy??
Who's a vegetarian?
I'm sure many of us have heard the disparaging remarks Anthony Bourdain has made about vegetarians. I don't agree, mostly because I used to be one, but now I sometimes question whether or not I could go without meat and if I could, I often wonder for how long. My boyfriend thinks he could go without meat as long as he could eat a steady stream of pasta, I tend to agree with the theory. Anyhow, I was just wondering if there's any vegetarian cooks here on Serious Eats and if so, what's your favorite vegetarian recipe? I haven't cooked a vegetarian meal in so long, I wouldn't even know where to start anymore.
Vegetarian Challenge
Hi,
My husband and I are trying to be more green and reduce our impact on this little planet of ours. So, we have decided to eat vegetarian for one week out of each month. To make a bigger impact, I have started a vegetarian challenge on my blog. To check out the recipes, participate in the challenge and win a chocolate bar, visit my blog!
Thanks,
Alison

Vegetarians: What dish could (briefly) turn you back to meat?
For me, it was the Chef's Tasting Menu at The French Laundry.
Just curious!
Vegetarian Crock Pot recipes
I've just bought a 4 quart slow cooler on sale, as I've heard positive things about slow cookers and I once had a friend who raved about them. Now I'm looking for recipes. I searched the Serious Eats site and found a Moroccan Jewish dish in comments (November 2007) and I will definitely try it some time, being Jewish. I know that baked beans are an option.
Other ideas?
Can I cook soup in it? I'd use it for the tortilla soup that I'm making for Friday evening (see my previous post) .
A word for former vegetarians who eat free range meat?
Is there a word for people, say former vegetarians, who will eat meat as long as it is raised humanely, free range, organically? I suggest "Fregan" (free range vegan) or "Fromnivore" (free range omnivore). Is there already something out there? Any more ideas?
Vegetarian Finger Food
I'm throwing a holiday party and have a great menu (lamb kebabs, bacon wrapped figs, deviled eggs, meat plate, etc.) I'll have a cheese plate and fresh veggies, but I need one substantial finger food option for the vegetarian invitees. Any ideas?
What is the best vegetarian restaurant in E. Village?
And please don't sayCaravan Dreams or Angelika. I am looking for new places to eat in my 'hood...
Vegetarian holiday food
Half my kids have gone vegetarian on me- protein being the star of most holiday meals, its a problem. My son, Billie, the chef, and I and my husband and one daughter are planning a surf and turf Christmas lunch, and the other kids are coming later. I've asked each of them for the one thing the couldn't resist on a menu, and Billie and I are going to come up with a 7 course vegetarian tasting menu. Wish us luck! My course is dessert- flourless chocolate cake with port ice cream- yummy!
Vegetarians / Thanksgiving
What would you like to see on the Thanksgiving table? Do you expect a special vegetarian main course or are side dishes sufficient?
What are the best vegetarian restaurants in Manhattan?
I am tired of Curley's and the others in the East Village (not that they are bad -- they are good!), but I have eaten at them countless times.
Any suggestions?
Help, I am dating a vegetarian!
New territory for me, but I am looking forward to the challenge. He eats almost all his meals out, and I am trying to convince him that he needs to eat in more. I am stymied, however, as to what to cook beyond vegetarian pasta dishes. Suggestions for good, basic cookbooks?
Mixed vegetarian crowd NYC restaurant suggestions?
Looking for suggestions for NYC restaurants that have an extensive vegetarian friendly menu (but also serve carnivores). This is for a special graduation dinner for 6; half veg heads/half not. Not interested in vegetarian restos. Thanks!
Question of the Day: Any vegetarians out there? Why'd you go meatless?
Last week, we asked former vegetarians why they had lapsed. This week, we're asking our vegetarian/vegan readers why they went meatless. Ethics? Health? Both? Other?
Dispatch: Moosewood Restaurant
I first heard of Moosewood during my college days, when a roommate and his girlfriend started cooking frequently from one of the Moosewood Collective cookbooks. It was the first time I'd really seen a cookbook devoted to serious vegetarian cuisine, and it seemed authoritative—and the way the roommate and his gf talked about it, I gathered that Moosewood was the end-all be-all of vegetarian eats.
So when the girlfriend and I were in Ithaca this weekend (thanks, Serious Eaters, for your recommendations) to visit her sister at Cornell University, I took them all out to Moosewood on Sunday night, eager to try the food at such a nationally famous restaurant.
Very underwhelming. I think Moosewood is resting on its laurels. I'm sure that when it started, it was making some unique and innovative vegetarian dishes and that it did its part to elevate meatless cooking beyond rice, beans, and lentils. But our fare on Sunday night was fairly boring and uninspired. I felt like I had eaten these dishes many times before.
Perhaps that's a testament to Moosewood's success—the fact that these dishes seemed like old hat may indicate how influential its recipes have been in the world of meatless meals. Still, I couldn't help feeling that the emperor had no clothes.
Did I go on a bad night or has Moosewood sort of fallen off? I would have much rather eaten again at the Hot Truck up on the Cornell campus.
