Refrigerator Crisper.

Yesterday I bought a ton of wonderful organic vegetables and many of them are already going limp because my refrigerator doesn't have a crisper. Does anyone have any suggestions as to how to keep my vegetables and fruits nice and fresh without the use of a cripser?

Attack your Front Lawn?

This NYT article briefly discusses architect Fritz Haeg's _Edible_Estates:_Attack_on_the_Front_Lawn_, a book on the progressive concept using one's front yard -- not backyard -- as a vegetable garden.

I'm not a homeowner yet, but I envision my "attacked" front lawn with a cornstalk fence along the property line, a Common Fig flanking each side of the house, a grapevined trellis over the front door, bush-sized herb plants in boxes, bright colors popping from red pepper plants, eggplant and yellow squash (summer), red cabbages, varicolored pumpkins (fall) and just to thumb my nose at Monsanto . . . two huge boxes full of dandilion plants for salad greens.

How would you "attack" your front yard?

Spinach Help?

My adorable but silly husband put away all of the groceries yesterday afternoon and put my fresh (like, just-out-of-the-ground fresh) spinach directly into the fridge, not the crisper. This morning, I opened the fridge to find all of that lovely spinach wilted and terrible-looking.

I put it into the crisper and am planning on giving it an ice-water bath later to try and perk it back up. Any other ideas? Will the ice-water bath damage it? How do you re-perked wilted spinach?

Any ideas for fresh hearts of palm?

I'm not talking about the fresh hearts of palm sold in liquid (looking rather like mozzarella) by Whole Foods; these babies are absolutely raw. I'm off to check my Florida cookbooks, but would appreciate suggestions.

Rootin' for the rutabaga...

I like this homely-looking root vegetable! Roasted with carrots & potatoes or added to vegetable soups. Also, steam & chill then add to green salads. Nutrition-wise, the rutabaga adds some fiber along with an okay dose of vitamins & minerals. What do you do with rutabagas?

Celebrate the dark side of winter...

...and welcome winter greens into your kitchen! Winter greens...kale, collard & beet greens, chard are rich in vitamins & minerals. Do you avoid them due to their bitter reputation? I've heard that when paired with ingredients like feta cheese, bacon or walnuts this helps balance the flavor. Kale is my favorite---add to soup or just steam & chill it then add to green salads. Also like greens added to eggs & lentils. How to you deal with these leafy greens?

So many carrots! What to do with them?

The CSA fairy delivered, among other things, 8 lbs of carrots. I'm planning on making a carrot cake (this one) and eating some raw, and sautéeing some others, but that still leaves... 6 lbs of carrots, probably. Help?

Does anyone know anything about growing artichokes?

I have 3 recently purchased plants. They're about a foot tall. When can i expect artichokes? Any suggestions on using fresh artichokes (up to moving to California, I only had ready access to canned)?

Which vegetable do you refuse to eat?

Okay...we are all grown-ups here, but we can refuse to eat vegetables we don't like :) I refuse to eat peas! Which vegetable do you avoid?

What do you do with sweet potatoes?

Years ago, I looked forward to eating candied sweet potatoes during the holidays---the goopy ones with the marshmallows on top. Nowdays, I'd rather just have a plain large baked one with butter. Are you fond of this sweet source of nutrition? How do you prepare & eat the root vegetable we sometimes call a yam?

What do you do with a head of cabbage?

Cabbage tries hard to please---it's cheap, good nutrient profile, stores well & can be prepared sweet, tart, plain or creamed. Recipes using this often friendless vegetable include: slaws, salads, stir-frys, stuffed, soup & sauerkraut. Interesting tip to reduce cabbage cooking oder: add an English walnut, shell & all, to the cooking liquid. Do you eat the lowly cabbage & its family members? Recipes?

How do you get toddlers to eat Vegetables?

What does it take to get toddlers to eat their veggies? Fresh, frozen, canned, etc. ,any suggestions?
