How do you tip?

I realize different areas of our country (and beyond) have some fairly strong views on tipping in restaurants. We generally tip 20% unless we are completely outraged by a service experience. (Then we back off to 15%) Are we on track?

Racial Tipping point

Interesting article in the Freakonomics blog today about tipping practices, and what data tells us.

"A cross-tab of the raw data shows that white customers tipped black servers almost four percentage points less than white servers and that black customers tipped black servers half a percentage point less."

(btw, the article starts out with taxi tipping and moves on to talk about restaurant tipping)

Do you think you tip fairly?

Do you tip for take out that you pick-up yourself?

There's that infamous line for tip on the credit card slip, and I feel guilty if I don't put something there. I'm a generous tipper for table service, but never sure about take out. Is someone dependent on that to live?

And then, there's the opposite - food delivery. Do all have a delivery charge? I know the driver only gets a portion. Is your tip based on the bill, or per trip?

How do you tell someone they're a bad tipper?

Out of curiosity, how do YOU tell someone they're a bad tipper. I would just come out and say it - maybe in a sort of joking way - but what would you do?

Delivery Tip - Revisited

Awhile back, there was a thread about how much to tip for home delivery. There were a wide variety of opinions, but I came away thinking 10% - 15% would be fair.

Suppose a restaurant charges a fee for delivery (e.g., last night I was charged a $2 delivery fee)...does the driver get that? If so, can I deduct $2 from the 10% - 15% delivery tip?

Thanks for your advice.

Are Carry Out Tips Optional?

I found the discussion on delivery tips to be interesting. I want to be fair when I tip - not too little or too much.

Here's my question. We've all faced signing a credit card slip for carry out where the proprieter has helpfully left the "tip" and "total" sections open for us to fill in.

So, what's the etiquette? Tip? If so, by how much?

Thanks!

How much do you tip the person who delivers your food?

With food delivery, do you tip a percentage like you do at a restaurant or do you tip a fixed dollar amount? My friends and I weren't sure when we discussed this issue last night.
